I was crewing on a comp car at this race and thought you would like to see some unique engined race cars, rather than 'run of the mill' Chevies, although there's nothing wrong with them, before anybody starts.

Jim Ford's RED is powered by an inclined 4 cylinder 180 CI Duke Pontiac engine. It launches at 7200 and goes through the traps at 9400. Carburated and running on petrol it ran a best of 8.27! Look how the chassis is formed around the gearbox and the rearend width.

Frankie Aragona is an east coast racer. His 4 cylinder Mopar powered altered ran 8.50 in qualifying.

I was crewing on Ralph Hopes 6 cylinder Ford powered 23T altered. It ran a best of 8.01 in qualifying and a 7.98 in losing the second round. The 5 speed Liberty transmission is manually shifted, with 60ft times of 1.13, on petrol. what a ride!

What an excellent thread, i love anything a bit different from the norm. Recently i visited Wayne allmans workshop and had a good look around the vw pickup methanol dragster/funnycar hybrid hes built. What an awesome but scary machine, cant wait to see it run.
Makes me wonder what other creations have been around or are being built, anybody got any interesting pics?

we looked into using an Audi v8 in the planning stages of our car but the cost of the base engine and then the development costs as well made it way out of our league. maybe with the lottery win

Interesting...I had a quite moment or two today and was idly looking at prices of parts, like you do.

You can buy, direct from Jaguar, a brand new stripped V8 from the latest XKR for £5k plus £1500 surcharge.

I know a stateside crate motor will be cheaper, but even so, I didnt think that was horrific.

Your right its not mega money and id love more diverse engines in the sport, it just made economic sense for us to go the tried and tested route, I couldve built two of our 383s for the price of that jag motor.

Obviously for most people cost is a major factor, but its nice to see something a bit different now and again. I remember a dragster running a Cosworth DFV a few years back and another one with a Kawasaki bike engine which might not sound very exciting now but this was before every second kit car you saw had a bike engine. Also got a soft spot for the old Jag 6 cylinder.

That bike engined dragster was exactly what I had in mind when I built my Fury.Trub is goes round corners to well !!!

I remember when nearly every altered was running a Jag 6.They looked gorgeous in open engine bays, nice sweepy pipes out one side and a barrel load of injectors hanging off the other side.

Mind you, that Turbo Pinto'd dragster that was at the Finals....how good did THAT motor look?

Sorry, cant remember what it was called
