Oh boy!! Think I've found my car - the only problem is my lack of knowledge with regard to mechanical problems. The current owner (a fellow PH'er and thoughroughly good egg) informs me of a gearbox problem
"When it was serviced and the oil was
changed the magnetic drain plug had attracted some 'slivers' from inside
the box - this is what the plug is supposed to do."
Could anyone shine some light on the seriousness of this and the likelyhood of the gearbox needing big work done
Manythanks - themanwithnosparecash.

While that is true in that a magnetic drain plug is supposed to catch any slivers of metal so they don't remain in suspension in the gearbox the appearence of slivers of metal would indicate, to me, a problem that requires further investigation. The only reason you may have slivers of metal in there, as far as I am aware, is if the gearbox has just been reconditioned and the slivers are the results of the new cogs bedding in... is this the case?

The gearbox isn't expensive to recondition (about 300 quid) but you need to go through the hassle of taking the engine/gearbox out and putting it all back in - I've just done this and it's fairly involved.
Apart from all this, the type-N gearbox doesn't normally have a drain plug. Has this been fitted to the gearbox ir is this one of the rare cars with an MT75? Did you have to pull a collar up on the gearstick to get it into reverse?

Mark
It could depend a lot on how many miles it has done and how often the gearbox oil has been changed in that time. Generally it's not regular, so this could possibly have been only the second time it has been done and the slivers may well have been present from new. Were there any indications of gearbox problems, difficulty in selection or noise etc? Some minor slivers can be generated from crashing a gearbox too, so it may be nothing. The only other indication of something more serious going on would be if there are more slivers present in another oil change after a few thousand miles or so. But that's not much help to you really until you've bought it.
Good luck Ren

HEY! What d'you mean you've found your car! I need more information than that! Let's see it then! Come on, spill the beans!
In most Haynes manuals, on the section regarding changin the gearbox oil, it says something like 'Remove any swarf from the magnetic drain plug.'
The drain plug is magnetic so that these bits don't get circulated with the oil, obviously, and this is the only thing they say about this, and don't imply that it is necessarily the sign of a problem.
Seriously, man, get on the phone! What's happening?

I never knew that, I stand corrected. Good luck with the car.

The car is excellent value - in fact more or less a Carlsberg

Yes I'm afraid it is. It seems that I'm faced with a change in my domestic arrangements that will necessitate a second house, solicitors bills, maintenance payments etc along with a reduction from two JSG cars to one along with a car for the current Mrs JSG
As I need four seats for work and will still need to transport three kids around the TVR has to be the casualty. I'm p1ssed off about it as I've spent money recently getting the roll bar fitted, new tyres, service, etc to get it sorted.
Once I'm clear on my new financial state later in the year I'll buy another TVR (if I can find the right one!).

John,
Sorry to hear the bad news - hope all works out well in the future.
It was seeing John's Car at one of the Berkshire TVRCC meets that made me determined to buy mine - especially after i started it and deafened myself.

Ren - you do want this car. It is a beauty.
Dammit, I want that car...!

Gutted for you John, 'there for the grace of god go I'
.
Ren this is one of the tidiest V8S's you'll come across, if you haven't bitten his hand off yet then do so quickly because he could change his mind. I know I would
.
re the gearbox ideally there should be nothing on the mag plug, however as already been said the cost to change is minimal compared to the quality of the car. Do not let that alone put you off, it's the whole package you should look at and price it accordingly. I'll be surprised if john would let you have it for less than £11/12K.

aherm - JSG is selling for £13k Harry
only kidding - no idea what the price is
thinking about it - i reckon that gearbox will need loads of work and the car is going to fall apart soon. Now Ren, how do you fancy a grey S3..........
JSG, apart that V8S............... edited to say - HarryW - heard this week the Swordfish has a warrant of execution in place at the mo - seems like the local residents have been trying to save it - similar to the Bugle in Hamble. Heres hoping....

Oh my God - I feel like Ive upset all the "S" owners south of Birmingham.
John you didn't tell me this car came with a complex - as for the bitten hand - Yes I've bitten as hard as my work schedule will permit - hopefully hard enough - I also hope things work out for you John and you are back in the club soon.
