Hi

I got the car today as a cheapish run about, so my actual P&J can stay tucked up in the garage for the winter (see my profile). The Toyota's in fantastic condition and i'm very pleased with it. It's a 1992 GT model, normally aspirated with a full main dealer service history it's mint.....

Anyway, to get to the point

1. The factory fit stereo is rubbish, so i'm going to stick a new CD tuner in it. Do I need a fascia kit for it like this:

www.cablesexpress.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=85_104&products_id=232

The head unit appears to be a single Dim fitment (i've not spent anytime at all examining it yet)

2. How many speakers is there? I think there are a pair of tweeters on the inside of the wing mirror attatchment area's, two speakers low down in the dash board which may be oval and two larger speakers in the side panels in the reareither side of the back seats. Anyone upgraded them? know the sizes etc? Am i going to finish up cutting holes in the door panel and mouting some in there instead?

As always, any info you can share would be appreciated.

Just get down Halfords etc and get a single din cubby box, which blanks off the extra gap left for the JDm and gives you somewhere to put keys/mobile tec

IIRC there are 6 speakers, in those positions you mentioned. Dont cut your car to fit speakers. It never looks right and makes a car harder to sell. I found the stereo in my old GT4 to be superb, and didn't replace anything (except the cd player which chewed up Cds)

Again, Halfords have a book containing all the dimensions etc of stock speakers, and model numbers for Sony custom fit ones that fit the gaps. Thats what I'd do (although I dont really listen to loud music)

.....Thanks for the feed back, I may be having a blonde moment, but what's a JDm?
The stereo seems to be in a 1 and a half dim slot if you leave the cup holders half din tray in place (I could remove it, but it's somewhere to put drinks in the summer). I couldn't see the usual places that you put the stereo removal keys? is it just the two slim keys to remove it from the din?

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market - often had slightly better spec's than the UK.
You can have a TOYOTA blanking plate as a replacement - just black with TOYOTA subtley embossed on it. And yes, 2 keys either side, should be easy to remove. Sorry can't remember what year GT you said it was - pop up or round headlights? I don't know enough about the gen5's (pop ups) but often you might find it easier/safer to remove the surround dash first.

Pop onto www.celica-club.co.uk and there'll be stacks of people (inc. me) to tell you what you've got, how to look after it, where to get discounts and parts from etc etc.
