At the risk of becoming a really boring b***ard, could I make one serious point.

If you notice that suddenly your eyes can't read the roadsigns as well as normal or that suddenly your glasses don't seem to work anymore - it might be worth getting checked for diabetes. Of course it could be too much wa**ing too!

A couple of years ago, driving back from Scotland, I wondered why everyone was going far quicker than I thought the road conditions warranted. A short while later I discovered that I was full of sugar (makes a change from sh*t).

According to the press, there's probably a million people out there who have it and don't know. It's a simple test and if you have got it, it needn't be the end of the world.

I've just been diagnosed with diabetes, not stabilised yet, have to carry two pairs of glasses with me, it's a right pain at the mo.

It gets easier and at least you will get free and proper eye checks and, if you need to use insulin or pills you will get free prescrptions so you'll save a lot of money in the long run.

It is well worth joining Diabetis UK for their support and good advice although their mag, Balance looses out to Evo!

Don't let it get to you, you'll soon be on top of it.

My eyesight seems to be fading fast. Is there a self test kit that you can buy? I suspect I've been reading too many one handed art pamphlets......but it would be nice to know.

although i don't have diabetes... or a wanking problem!!!

i do wear glasses for driving, and it was quite funny how i found out i needed them...

i used to sit at the back of my german class and wondered why i could never read the writing on the board, but thought nothing of it... it was only when i went target shooting (25m indoor range) and realised that i couldn't focus on the target that something clicked in my head to go see the optician... and low and behold, glasses were required!!!

Do join Diabetes UK but don't let the 'gloom & doom' stories get to you. With new tests and treatments complications can hopefully be minimised.

Just keep to your diet and any medication.

My eyesight got much better very quickly and you get free medicals every six months. It could be alot worse and since making the effort to get fitter, I don't think that I've ever felt better.

If you think you may ahve the condition simply ask someone who has it if they can do a test on you - just a little prick and all that!

It's better discovered early and it keeps the damage to eyesight minimised - so you continue to drive.

But don't forget to tell DVLA otherwise you could have insurance problems if you stuff it.

Don't worry about DVLAs response it is a standard letter and its only effect is to legitimise your licence, there is no downside unless your condition is severe and you drive commercials.
