76 in a 50 - In North Wales - £200 fine and 4 points.

Do you think he got off relatively lightly?

Depends on the road in question and the conditions at the time. 26mph over the limit should be a hanging offence in some places, but others I won't even raise an eye-brow at.

If I were caught in a 50mph limit doing 76mph though, I'd be nervous and wondering if I were going to get a bus pass.

We have a dual carriage way with a good central reservation near us with a 50mph limit.

You could do 76mph on it at most times of the day in perfect safety.

Although if it was safe to do so he perhaps should not have been fined at all....

But, at the court down the road for 23 mph over the limit in a 70 I was given 6 points and £200 fine.

But he got 4 points for 26 over the limit in a 50!?

I agree, that is a light sentance compared to mine

Just checked the magistrates guidelines too-

For 26mph over the limit in a 50 zone the only options are 6 points or consider a ban of 14-56 days!

Hmm, more evidence of the 'system' coming to aid its own...?

I think he got away very lightly, that is over 50% over the speed limit...

If you apply the same reasoning to motorways/dual carraigeways then 105MPH would only get 4 points and a small fine....

Don't though - roads like that could have been designed for mobile Scamera van traps.

Ridiculous, isn't it?

If he'd crashed I'd throw the book at him.

What harm has he done by exceeding an arbitrary limit?

Who says 51mph is too dangerous for this road, let alone 76mph?

Or, is it just about Highway Robbery?

{yawn} Again, that depends on the circumstances, and the road in question. Perhaps it was really a very harsh penalty. There's a DC road near me that's recently become 50mph (from NSL) - 2 months ago people were (mostly) safely doing nearly 80mph down it - now you'd get a ban for it...it all depends.

Are we keeping you awake, tigger1?

The real point is that there should be no arbitrary speed limits. Just prosecute those who travel at an inappropriate speed.

If there's an accident, that will be easy to quantify, if not no harm done.

That means that people will be able to drive at a speed commensurate with their ability, rather than reducing it to the lowest common denominator.

As this guy had no accident, incident, or suchlike he was clearly able to travel at 76mph on this road. Why is he then being prosecuted?

Quite amusing that he was hoisted by his own petard though. I guess that is the point of the thread anyway?

But surely, as a Speed Camera installer, he knows that they are only placed in Danger areas. Therefore, by travelling at such an incredibly dangerous speed he was practically slaughtering up to 10 innocent children, and risking his very life by travelling down such a road at vomit inducing velocities on HMG roads. His soon to be child is lucky his father wasn't wrapped around a tree. [sarcasm mode off]

Not paying attention to the signs is also rather worrying, he ought to know it is a 50mph limit, sounds like undue care to me.

Just yet another case of them proving that speed cameras are a load of bollox, so they all ignore the limits too. Glad he got caught though, a few more points and he won't be installing any more cameras..

Exactly.

I'd rather live in a cardboard box than install those things. Poetic Justice at its finest IMHO

Anyone working in the scamera racket should be banned for life and sacked for even 1mph over the most unreasonably low limit.

Anything else is hypocracy.

Yet more proof, added to that generated when a prominent BIB gets caught, that even those in the revenue camera industry and enforcement industry are only doing the job to get paid and probably don't believe in it any more than anyone else. It's also a sad statement of what some people will do with their principles...

What if someone else says your speed was inappropriate & you don't think it was, where does that leave you ?
