Passworded Webpage + Domain Hosting
Discussion
I'm in the process of sorting a small website for us that will hold all our wedding details on. The idea is that when we send out invites, we'll include a note to view this site that has all the info like Wedding list, accomodation in the area, directions e.t.c.
Anyway, i'd ideally like to password protect this page, and i've found a small java script that does exactly that...unfortunatly, it also causes warnings in IE as it gets blocked. I know it's easy enough for people to unblock it on the toolbar, but it's not ideal, i'd rather it was a seamless password login if you know what I mean.
I've got some hosted webspace with 123reg.co.uk, and this is due for renewal in 8 weeks or so. I'm considering not renewing, but joining register1 instead (what with all the good praise on here).
Does anyone know if register1 allow you to have server side secure directories, as I think this would be my answer to the nice clean login script problem.
Thanks in advance.

If you move your hosing to a Register1 VDS you get a nice Graphical section where you can password protect directories / groups of directories to individual users or groups of users. Sounds like just what you need..

Excellent, thanks very much. Some googling on .htaccess and i now have a secure website.
Just one question, does the .htaccess file need to be in the root, or can it be put into a directory so it only works on that folder.
e.g. www.domainnamehere.comwedding.htac rather than www.domainnamehere.com.htaccess
I would try, but i'm in the office and dont have access to ftp, only the silly file uploaded that comes with the hosting, and this doesnt see .htaccess as it must be a hidden file.
Edited to add...I've answered my own question, and got it to work.
Many Thanks for the help.

it will effect any folder it is placed in AS WELL AS any folder(s) underneath it (ie children folders) so only place it in the top folder if you want it to effect the whole site.
Most FTP clients are set to ignore .* files, so you might need to edit that or contact 123-Reg Support.

As above. As for Register1 doing this, it depends if they are HOSTING your site or if you are just changing the domain name over to them..
