Numpty PC Question
Discussion
Hello all, wonder if any of you can help me.
My PC has never worked properly since I fitted a new motherboard bundle about 18 months ago with blue screen crashes at random intervals but now it just gets to the XP loading page, crashes and repeats ad infinitum.
I took it to a local IT shop (probably a mistake) a while back to see if they could figure out the problem and they came to the conclusion that the processor is faulty. Now, I would have thought that a processor would either just work or not with no middle ground. This leads me to think that the shop is just trying to make me buy new kit.
If a processor becomes faulty, does it just stop working or can it kinda work a bit?
Any thoughts?
Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

When you fitted the new motherboard was it a 100% drop-in for the old one, or did you upgrade?
If you upgraded did you reinstall Windows at any point since the swap?
If not then it could well be that Windows is having issues with an old driver from original mobo and the new one (something that is almost, but not quite like an original peice of hardware. Or perhaps an old driver and a new driver attempting to co-exist).
If you haven't tried it I'd suggest reinstalling Windows.
CPU's like anything can fail, however usually something else goes bang taking them with it (faulty mobo voltage regulators, power spikes), I'm skeptikal that someone over the phone could just go "Yep. CPU is buggered." as to be quite honest "random rebooting" could be anything from shafted XP install up....
If the reinstall Windows (or repair install even) doesn't work then crack open the side panel and make sure all the fans are spinning freely and not being fouled by cables; also make sure the heatsink on the processor is firmly attached and not stuffed full of dust. Whilst you've got the sucker open have a look at all the capacitors on the board, see if any are leaking or bulging... it's probably not that but might was well eliminate the possibility.
