Help: need an inertia reel!
Discussion
Would anyone have an inertia reel assembly I could buy from them?
I've seen some lovely 'Securon' products but at the moment I have neither the time or funding to replace both sides. Can't seem to get hold of the original items anymore and breakers won't pass them on - for reasons I can understand.
Hope someone can help out here.
Thanks
Bruce

Looks like the Securon item which is gonna be £100+ per side.
As I considered the assembly to be stuffed, I thought I'd take a look inside (despite it being a non-serviceable component) and see if I could establish the reason behind it's reluctance to release. I'll post a shot of its gubbins later today.

Is this price direct from the manufacturer?
When I bought a pair of belts they told me quite honestly that I would get a much better deal from a motor factors so armed with the product code I bought a pair for well under half your amount from Partco.
Do a search on here - I got all the info I needed from a couple of posts last year.

Bought one the other day from David Gerald, circa £75.00 secure deliverd next day. You get a complete kit for one side. Although its not identical to the orginal, its very similar and its manufacturered by the same company, (from Indiana U.S.A). There's no way you can service these things, if its original then its simply worn out. A small price to pay for the safety of yourselve and your passenger.
Cheers guys.
I took a couple of shots of the mechanism but I've just checked 'em out and they're not of a standard worth posting. It's quite an interesting device and doesn't contain anyything pre-set as opposed to the clock-spring for the recoil which is on the opposite end. I can now see why these things become problematic if you've parked up on an incline; be it uphill, down hill or on a camber.
A steel ball sits in a cup like seat; above the steel ball is a plastic lever which midway along its length contains a similar seat. The lever is pivoted at one end and has a pawl at the other. An inclination will cause the ball to roll from the seated position raising the pawl to engage into a plastic ratchet wheel. This doesn't bear any load but brings about the engagement of heavy duty pawls into a similarly heavy duty ratchet ring; this absorbing the load of you and I in a smack-up.
In the seat in which the ball sits there had been a gathering of dust, dirt, cack etc. It took little more than the clearing out with a pencil brush and a wipe over with a cloth; no dismantling other than the end cap removal. The cap is now back in place and the thing works perfectly. I take safety as seriously as anyone. What would you do?

Hey bruce,
L8 in on this one, but i did this two or three years ago, had no probs and still work fine. (no sudden impacts tho...touchwood).
I don't have a prob, as nothing is loaded or tensioned in the mech...so cleaned and lightly greased.
cheers

Put in a roll bar and four pointers. Have you seen where the shoulder strap of the inertia reel mounts?
I've been considering a roll bar; just not so sure about the harness. I'm sure they'll keep you in place far better than a conventional seat belt, but do they bear the requisite approval for road use? What are the legal implications after a smack-up? What's an insurers perspective?
Ref' the shoulder strap: is it considered to be poorly positioned? I guess all conventional seat belts are a compromise between safety and convenience. My thoughts had been to upgrade to the 'Securon' replacement as funds allow; assuming it is an upgrade.

Sorry, my reply was a bit flippant, and this one's not going to be much more useful!... I was really referring to the fact that the shoulder strap is bolted to a captive nut in the GRP - not the chassis! I've got Tower View rollbar and four point harnesses on mine. The harnesses are brilliant - they pull you right into the seat - no more sliding around. Only problem is you can't lean forward and your ability to look over either shoulder is restricted. Reversing is impossible with the harness done up. In practice I never use them on the road, because although I think they'd do a better job in a crash, I'm not happy with the restricted 3/4 vision. I've got Securon harnesses and they came with a piece of paper stating they are BS somethingorother and road/MOT legal. I haven't asked the insurance because I only use them on track. I guess you could always do up the harness then put the seatbelt over the top for insurance happiness (still best check). You're welcome to have look/sit at the RR day.

Griffter, I too have the Tower View rollbar - this may seem a daft question:
I can see where the top straps of the 4 point harness bolt to, where do you bolt the bottom 2 straps?
TIA
FG
I've got eyebolts holding my two lower seatbelt mountings (one to the sill, one to the transmission tunnel, either side of the seat), replacing the standard bolts. The two lower harness points clip to those - so the harness is anchored at the same two lower points as the seatbelt. Allows both the seatbelts and harnesses to be installed at the same time, although the harnesses are removable in seconds.
