Either my wife or myself has accidentally deleted a folder from Outlook Express 6, local folders. It contains a lot of her old emails. Its not in deleted items or the Recycle Bin, and she is somewhat pi**ed off about it.

Is there any way we can restore it?

TIA
Paul.

If you are running Windows XP go start, search and look for files "*.dbx". If you find the one you are looking for and it's in a weird place (i.e. not where the other .dbx (local folders) files are, move it to their location. Outlook express will be looking for that file in a place it was set up to so if it is not wth the other .dbx files OE will not know of it's existance.

No luck with searching for .dbx files I'm afraid. It only found the ones in the 'Local Folder' of OE.
I've also downloaded a trial version of WinUndelete. That found a couple of small .dbx files, but not the one I'm after.
Any other thoughts?

I fear it may be lost forever! I don't suppose you have ever backed up onto CD or anything?

You'll need software (and 1-2GB USB memory stick) that'll scavenge the HDD looking for the data.
Provided you've installed nothing since, then you won't have potentially overwritten some/all of the data.
But, stop using the computer until you have the software, which if it finds it, you can recover to the USB drive, then copy to it's default location.
Be sure there's no 'other' data you want seen - as the software will find a lot of previously deleted material.

Thanks. I've also tried a trial version of PC Tools software. It found 16 OE folders, but I have to buy the full version before I can recover the data. That will be the wife's decision, as its her emails.
Will recovering to CD-RW be OK?

Paul.

If supported by the SW, but it'll depend on how it caches the data - if you run out of free memory, it'll write it to the HDD as paged-out.
Another HDD would be the ideal solution as it'll provide a platform for the SW to run from, if not directly from the CD/DVD which it comes on, presuming you've not downloaded it and installed on the HDD.

No, I've downloaded it to a CDRW, and run it from that. The SW allows you to select where the date is recovered. I just wondered if you said use a memory stick for any special reason, other than trying to avoid writing to the hard drive.

Think he said memory stick as it's quick and easy! CD should be fine!
