Can anyone point me in the right direction for data recovery software. Have a Hard drive that windows does not recognise as having data on which windows wants to format. Have tried ontrak which finds the files fine but for the full version $199 seems a bit steep.

Thanks in advance.

you got to think, how much is the data worth????

I.e. would you trust the recovery to some $20 shareware, when you know ontrack will do the job

On the other hand, Have you tried norton disk tools or whatever they are called these days, normally a bit cheaper and will probably get the job done

Quite acurate. If the data is important then OnTrack is well worth the price of admission as will be some form of backup device.
To be honest, I read of people having good results with other manu's software and cheaper utilities but my personal leaning is that OnTrack is far more trust worthy.

$199 is peanuts compared to the cost of sending it off to a commercial data recovery company should you mess it up with another tool.
If OnTrack finds the files, I'd seriously consider stumping up the cash.

Restorer2000 yes About £20 and excellent... I recovered a complete set of baby pictures for someone with it and the drive was very very stuffed indeed.

Have you tried the old trick of popping the drive in another machine as a slave?

I have recovered a few hard drives using a file scavenger program that I have here, recovered one this week even.

If you wanted to post it over to me then I'm happy to have a got at it for you, just drop me an email. It will cost you whatever the postage is and no more. Have done this before for members of other forums too, including laptop drives.

What I would suggest is obviously once what can be recovered is recovered then it all goes onto a new drive and the one you have now goes in the bin.

I had one a few weeks ago where windows just said 'drive not formatted', and wouldn't even try to chkdsk it. But booting up off a linux live CD read the data perfectly and dumped it straight off over the network, allthough it did take a while due to the bad sectors on the disk.

The one I used was called 'Insert' and was built into 'ultimate boot CD'. However it's a bit forensic-y & not very newbie friendly, so you might want to try Linspire or something else which is easier to use.
