Before anyone says install Windows 2000 (I have on my desktop), XP is on my laptop and works.

My annoyance though is saving favourite URL's, I always expect the last one saved to appear at the bottom of the favourites list but XP seems to be sorting them out in alphbetical order all the bloody time. (Haven't got round to creating folders for them yet but I suspect it will happen on them too!)

Anyway to stop it?

NO!

Go into favourites... right click, and then select "sort by name"

Nope I mean when you have the favourites open in Internet Explorer.

Nope that only works with the Start menu.

Maybe it's just me but sometimes in XP you change a setting and in the session you're in it has no apparent effect. But the change is done when you re-start the machine... try it. At least I'll know if it's just my wierdy laptop.

Yes and how do you permanently removed the "Links" option from favourites in IE? You can ditch it but next time you open up it comes back like a bad penny.

I'm sure there must be a registry setting to turn it off - just can't be bothered to hunt it down.

Is it possible to go to c: open up the windows file, you should find a sub-folder called favourites, in that there is another sub folder; links. Does deleting that remove links from the favouries drop down menu?

try using Netscape instead - you cna change more or less anything you want...
and most viruses/worms are aimed at IE/Outlook so they pass you by.

Nope. Anyway under 2000/XP it has the concept of parameters based on a per user basis ("Documents and Settings" folder and sub-directories). You can delete the folder but back it comes again once you fire up IE.

I'm getting arsed off with it now; it's more of an annoyance than anything else but if I find out the registry setting I'll post it back.

I you delete the kinks in the folder, rather than the actual folder, it works.

Also, 2000+xp have an All Users folder under c:documents nad settings. also there's a default user folder there. You'll need to have hiden files viewable to see them. If you take the links out of there, they should stop coming back.

If you're on a big network with roaming profiles, and they keep coming back, get IT onto it.

As with most windows programs, if you close it using the cross in the top right corner it just closes. If you close it by double-clicking the little icon in the top left corner it should save it's setting (screen position, size etc). Try removing the links bar, then double clicking this icon - it shouldn't be there when it loads up.

I accept no responsibility for trying this though!

You could give Opera a go. Much quicker than either Netscape or InternetExploiter and you alter pretty much anything. My PC's currently doing a very good mac impersonation, thanks to a new skin in Opera.

It will even selectively kill popups

Any compatability problems with Internet Explorer trying to take over things or can you disable IE?

In Opera File:Preferences: Default Browser: select all click check at start up box, Opera then hijacks all the file associations and IE stops working. Result= Bill Gates. I've yet to find a site where Opera causes any significant probs. (certainly better than N'scape in this respect) and it's plug-in compatible with N'scape.

Whilst we are on the subject of Windows XP, I have been having probs with my profile not loading properly.

I want to completely format the Hard drive and start again, as reloading installing windows is still bringing up my old settings.

I am trying to find a way of getting into DOS so I can format the hard drive.

Any ideas how I can get into DOS??.

Thanks
