Modeo Zetec -S rev counter problem

It is actually a mates car, he has just sent me the following over on the email:
"there was one more thing i meant to ask you - my rev counter seems to have a connector problem - when im driving down the motorway, the rev needle sometimes drops down to 500-1,500 rpm - but the engine isnt losing power in any way... all i wanna know is whether this is some kind of warning for something else about to happen!!"
If anyone can shed some light i would appreciate it.
