An entire can of coke all over the keyboard and then left to fester over the weekend, am I to assume this will be a total write off and beyond any form of reasonable repair?

Probably, in all honesty.

Unless its a ruggedized job like a Toughbook.

Sony Viao, I'd hate it to go off to the insurers and be repairable.

Depends. Does it still power up? I have spilt stuff over keyboards on laptops before and got away with just replacing the keybosrd.

Jet wash it and see what happens.

Indeed. Crank the thing up and see if it powers on, you might find that other than being sticky everything works fine.

Laptops can be reasonably ruggade these days at least in terms of small spills and/or protecting the innards from liquid (Thinkpads apparently have spill channels so stuff on the keyboard runs out of holes without going near the electronics.

Dunno much about Sony's design but as others have said if it powers up and works properly then a replacement keyboard is probably all you need. If it's totally dead then either waranty it or perhaps if it's out of waranty a quick phone call to your insurance company and claim on contents?

It's deader than Atila the Hun, managed to access the HD through a fly lead into another PC and save/delete what I wanted and what I didn't want others to see (no not in a Gary Glitter sense just sensitive work stuff) but it's going to be collected for "assessment" by the insurers agent, I just wanted to be sure that it's totally fubared so that it's a new one and not a repair job seeing as I've already been out and bought a replacement. I realise they will probably want to replace it and not give me the money but atleast it will be another shiny new one then.

If you've brought a new one and then they repair it or give you a new one... then you have either a xmas gift for someone or the perfect thing to throw on ebay
Personally if it's not powering on then I'd suggest the innards are well shagged and knowing Sony's pricing for spares I'd say it's an instant BER.
