dont waste money on a tracker, if its insured anyway you will get your money then buy another car. tracker will return your car which some nugget might have thrashed from cold and damaged engine, if it isnt crashed or burnt out anyway. it does its job right enough if working correctly but thats my opinion of them

Plus in my experience you don't get your insurance any cheaper if you have a tracker fitted. I tested this once and was given the same quote with and without one.

Only worth it if you have a rare or very expensive car that could be a target for theft and go for the best system available.

The thing to do is get the V5 stamped by the tracker company as tracker installed plus keep a proof of receipt for your annual subscription (send a copy of both to you insurer. That puts you in the clear in the event of the car been stolen.

My best insurance deal on the Griff this year was £439 tracker installed or £850 without it!!! so it pretty much paid for itself.

RAC Trackstar is GPS based so any cover over the car or the ariel with block the signal and render the system useless.

I've got one. It was required for insurance last year, but not this year. confused

It certainly used to work, because I got a call when it was on the back of a truck being taken in for repairs.

Now, however, it works only on odd occasions. I know this because I have the speed camera option and rarely now does it warn me of speed cameras. Sometimes it does, but mostly it doesn't.

I’ve got an RAC trackstar on mine. They have only once ever called me when it’sas been transported. And I’ve had it transported at least 10 times, sometimes from one end of the country to another. I called them to complain and they tested it and said it’s working fine. Total waste of money IMHO, but I had to have it to get insurance.

My old Impreza Turbo got stolen (fortunately a few days after I sold it). That had a top of the range NavTrak on it – again to satisfy the insurance company – and guess what? They couldn’t find it after it was nicked. Another total waste of money.

Just a question

Are there trackers that send an SMS to your mobile?

Many house alarms do this these days sonar and there are various services that allow you to track mobile phone destinations phone(with owners permission!)

Never looked - so have no idea!

I have to second this. On my latest purchase it had a tracker fitted but not enabled. So for every quote I got I asked if the tracker made a difference - and it was a unanimous and resounding no. As FWD says, the savings only come in when it's rare/expensive.

Carl Baker (Meta Alarm God bow) fitted one in our Cerb and it keeps texting us when we are speeding.
The phone never stops ringing hehe This is a great piece of kit but I'm sure Carl or Steve_T will elaborate more.

I have had terrible service from Trackstar. The unit failed about three months ago.Its been reported to them and tested while on the move and yes there is a problem .Rather than send out a service engineer as the helpful lady on the phone suggested they would need to do asthe next step they have suggested it was my fault for disconnecting it from the battery which I have never been near and .....that's it.

I'll call them again tomorrow-usefull prompt this thread.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Jubilee (Lloyds Syndicate) - got the quote via www.masterquote.co.uk. I like Lloyds Syndicates as insurers as I have a pass to the Lloyds building (the one with the insides on the outsides) so I can always kick up a stink if they were ever to mess me around

Bizarrely the Griff is cheaper to insure than the Chimaera!

We sell a 12 volt device at work, it dials one number using a sim card, for use with home or car, they're around £239.

There's two wires on it that need shorting together to make it dial.

They do various bits to add on to it if you don't already have an alarm, ultrasonics, mercury switches etc

The receiving phone number, could do with caller I.D. though, as it doesn't play a message, you just get the silent treatment
