I have a 2003 Range Rover III TD6,48,000 miles, owned since new, all servicing carried out on time and by the supplying dealer, the last service carried out last Monday.

On Saturday(ie 4 days after service), I had to drop my daughter off and noticed when turning around a bit of a clunk when moving from 'D' to 'R', unusual I thought but nothing too severe so drove on. 45 minutes later whilst driving along a city street at no more than 25/30 mph. I hear an almoghty bang (so loud I thought something had driven into the car) and all drive is immediately lost. I coast to the side of the road, jump out and look for damage. Nothing visible. Restart the car, no problem. Engage D, awful loud grinding, whirring noise is all that happens, no drive at all. Scratch head, call AA, they arrive, diagnose "catastrophic gearbox failure", take car away to be sent to dealer this week.

Today, I speak to my father who has the same car, but 1 year older, and he says the exact same thing happened to his RR, whilst driving down the m-way at 75 mph! His dealer told him that this was a known problem with the car and is caused by a faulty front differential alignment, making the input splines shear. As his car was out of warranty, they initially told him that the repair was for his account (£3,000+), but after he kicked up a fuss , they agreed to cover all costs themselves.

I'm still waiting for my dealer to diagnose the problem as the same as my father experienced, but just wondered if any other PHers had experienced this problem, and if so what the outcome was and if Land Rover paid up to get the necessary repairs done.

Thanks guys
Tifosi

Sadly seems to be a common fault with these models is driveshaft problems. Friend has an 02 Td6 only 30,000 miles and the driveshaft failed last month, luckily he agreed to pay only a £200 contribution with main agent paying the rest.

It is a known problem, I thought there had been a recall on this as I remember a friend having his RR in at about 6 months for a new front diff.

Hi - my 52 plate 4.4 Vogue has done the prop / front diff again this morning for the third time. Range Rover have refused to deal with it again. Completely hacked off with it. Piece of ccensoredp Any thoughts short of torching it? Know anyone breaking a series III with a front diff / prop up for grabs??
