997 gt3 - rear seats
Discussion
Can anyone tell me whether the new gt3 can be retrofitted with standard 997 rear seats or belts?
I am considering buying a GT3 and would need to put a child in the back occasionally (otherwise wife says its not practical). Is it possible?
In essence, all it needs is the unpadded bulkhead that forms the seats and the bolt holes. Any help?

I wouldn't have thought so. There's very little room in the back. Neither the bucket seats or even the standard GT3 seats fold forward to gain access to the back. I think the costs in converting/ installing seats would be prohibitive.
What about the sports seats? Do they fold forwards?
As for converting, wouldn't be a problem as it would only need a seat belt harness and not the pads.
Have you, or anyone else, seen the back? I know its an odd question, but it makes a lot of difference to the useabilty of the car.
I think it's do-able, safely and neatly.
Firstly, you would need the front Sports Seats and no roll cage. You would then need to get approval from your insurers, explaining that you are retro-fitting the rear seats (as fitted to the C2/C4), using all original parts.
If they are happy it should be fine, and the extra weight is marginal.
However, Porsche themselves may not want to do it and will probably say that the car is homologated as a 2-seater. But this is just their corporate inflexibility.

Yes I have seen the back - i was sat in an RS last Thurs. Here is a view of the rear of a GT3 inside:

Also, I dont think the sports seats (standard GT3) fold forwards - why would they as there are no seats behind??

I'm pretty sure they do fold forwards on the GT3. They do on the Boxster and, presumably, Cayman.

I think weve had this discussion before,i am led to believe that it is illegal in U.K law to have passengers in the back if the front seats dont fold forwards due to restrictive access .I am considering buying a GT3 and would need to put a child in the back occasionally (otherwise wife says its not practical). Is it possible?

I'm sure if your rich enough and speak to Porsche Germany they will produce anything you want!
There's a 993 RS with sport seats (not the 1 shell buckets) which has rear seats that were fitted as a factory option
Was I reading recently that this was for the Malasian market? .. It had me wondering if I could import one of those beauties to use as my family car
Rear seats in the GT3 should be feasible, with the front sports seats. Afterall, they have simply been deleted.
The 2.7RS had rear seats in the Touring (M472), but not in the Sport (M471 lwt). They were also deleted in the 911 Club Sport. UK cars had a rear shelf, but there are a few with rear seats fitted later.
Best to use new, original parts, professionally fitted, and notify your insurers.

Yes you can fold the standard sports seat forward & yes you could pay to have rear seats fitted...BUT....
Isn't this down to the fact that the car hasn't been homologated for sale with rear seats, so you would have major insurance issues should you have a smash & rear passengers were hurt, this is one you should definitely get official word from Porsche HQ & your insurance company before going down that route!

Earplugs and a good lawyer, much cheaper

Good idea.
As for seats. obviously folding seats can be got for the front. As for the rear section, it is the same as standard minus seat pads and belts. So the arguement that there is no room is the same as for all other 911's.
The only issue that really concerns me is insurance. "Has it been modified Mr. Porsche owner?"
"Um????"
You should just have the scultptured rear seat wells, covered in carpet, so the rear seats and belts should just bolt in.
A small specialist insurer would probably be quite happy, but trying to explain it to someone with a limited grasp of English in a call centre in Outer Mongolia might be a bit trickier.
