Wheres the best place to get standard brake discs for a 96 500 and what are they likley to cost? There are uprated kits on Ebay, anyone used them?

Being a December 96 car, am I right in saying thes disc size changed around then? My 95 500 seems to have smaller discs.

Try www.tvrcarparts.com

I recently bought a full set of pads and disks from them....very reasonably priced.

I think the sizes of the pads changed around 96-97 (200 to 240mm) and the discs changed to become air-vented around the same time IIRC.

I bought the Tarox G88 discs for my Chimera 400 and I have to say they look very nice and perform even better (they are available at Motorsportworld who I have dealt with and are very competant) the previous discs I had were Black Diamond and they had corroded badly after only about 15k miles these look like they would last the pace a bit better, I also bought tarox pads, not a cheap solution but then next to tyres its a pretty important component.

I've just got some new brakes off ebay, still bedding in but a marked improvement over standard and soooooooo cheap!!!

I'm pretty sure the standard discs were lockheed or similar before being drilled and grooved so they are not shoddy quality, and at £51.99 a pair you can't go wrong. I'll get some pics up if people are interested, changed the fronts and rears (rears were marginally dearer at approx £70 a pair)

Ahhh, I've seen those - are they the bargain they seem? Almost too good to be true! Have you kept your original pads or improved those too?

Still running new standard pads on the front, but only by virtue of ordering the wrong set of ferrodos and being too impatient once the car was in bits to wait for the right ones to be delivered.

They seem to be good quality - they are based on Lockheed or similar discs to begin with, which naturally cost sod all as they are originally Ford Escort discs, and they just drill and groove them and that's it. Personally I don't see that there's a lot of benefit to buying the EBC's, especially when their drilling isn't drilling, it's just dimpling which theoretically is less effective than drilling as it doesn't release the gas built up between the friction surfaces.

I'll have the car out over the weekend for a few upgrades and a good clean so I'll get some pics then :-)

Hi Jut
IS the disk you bought direct replacement to the original. Are they any larger? Will the original caliper work or do you need to change them as well. Can you put up some photos or send it to my email address at wl@thehenleygroup.com.hk This will be very much appreciated. PS I have a late 96 Chim 500. I want to upgrade the braking system. Thanks & regards

Yep I got the ones from Metec of ebay and have had them on now for over a year. Have done 8 track days in them and run with Mintex pads.

They are a vast improvement and will have them again in the future, they work really well and have out lasted Green Stuff and EBC shod TVR's with ease.

Really good disc's.

You have email with pics - not great quality, they're from my phone cam, sorry!

They are direct replacements for the originals, use the standard caliper and standard size pads. I fitted new discs and pads all round, together with Aeoquip full stainless braided hoses, and a flush through with Castrol Response Super Dot 4 fluid. They were better than the standard brakes from the moment they went on, and are getting better with every mile. They won't outperform a big brake conversion I'm sure, but I managed to get pads, discs, hoses and fluid for approximately £250 all in - most big brake conversions are over £1,000. For the money I've spent I'm very happy, I reckon stopping distances are already down by about half and the effort needed applying the brakes is much reduced - although my original brakes were a bit neglected.
