Currently got a Draytek 2600G and the wireless is very flaky. I've got the official Xbox 360 wireless adaptor and after 30 mins of it being connected the wireless drops completely, the same is true if I use the squeezebox, after a while wireless just vanishes and only a reboot will sort it. It may be load related as heavy transfers from wireless computers to wired also cause the same, tried different firnmware etc.

So, does anyone use a Squeezebox 3 and a wireless Xbox 360 and if so what router do you use. Cheers.

I just got yeaterday (see my other thread about wireless packing up!) the DG834PN, no idea what the P does but so far I am pretty impressed. Sub 5 mins to set up and work, decent signal bearing in mind it is in the floor in the hall and I am on the 2nd floor here. Although it doesn't show as fast as my old 3Com, I suspect though that the 3Com software may not have been quite telling the truth.

Netgear kit quite simply obliterates the competition.

Try the new AVM Fritz!Box 7050 WLAN.

Does everything the Netgear does - but also includes a voice over internet module. You just plug in your standard phones and make very low-priced phone calls. Easy.

Review of it here.

Cheers, the DG834N does look good, is it worth the extra over the DG834PN though given that N is a draft standard and may well change meaning the N part of the router is redundant, or will the hardware remain the same and any changes to the 802.11n standard be work roundable via firmware?

Thanks for the quick responses

I may move to the 'N' version then. My 'G' version will run for a day or so, then on bad line quality disconnect and never reconnect without a reboot. Lastest firmware etc... Wireless stays up the whole time. Only started doing this when I started using nothing but wireless (was fine with wireless off for months at a time).

DG834PN will give better range to all clients using its smart antenna array

DG834N is best for throughput as long as you use the N adapters to go with it

DG834GT, N and PN are all Broadcom ADSL based
DG834G is Texas Instruments based

all have passed BT lab testing (unlike most ADSL kit sold in UK - I only know of 3 CPE manufacturers that do this) so will work fine on BTs network (or resellers of i.e. anything other than LLU providers)

differences in performance on LLU providers network can be down to DSLAM interoperability.

Best bet is to check with your ISP on whos kit they ship, or that theyve tested and approved for use if you want the best ADSL performance...this becomes more critical for higher than 2Mbps service...

BT Wholesale, AOL, Sky + many others all ship Netgear for some strange reason ...and its not because its the cheapest.....

Cheers Bogie, will the DG834N give the same range as the DG834PN?

not yet ...maybe in the future as the wireless drivers develop on the N stuff, will give more throughput at a given range though

I have a Netgear DG834Gt and it is a pain in the bum. It seemed to be fine at first but now drops out quite often and needs to be rebooted nearly everytime I turn the PC on.

wireless or WAN dropping? whos your ISP? ...if its wireless whats changed in the environment....these are electronic devices....they dont generally wear out/go 'bad' over time ..they either work or they dont

they are designed to last 5-7 years of 24 x 7 use...usually gone out of date by then anyway...most common failure are power supplies as these have lower MTBF ...if it works fine one week then not at a later date, something has changed.

DG834G is fine - its 54Mbps 802.11g and ADSL2+ ...and the most popular wireless gateway in the UK

you only need more if you want a faster home network to transfer large files about......

The only problem I have with my 834PN is that my ISP is crap and disconnects all the time, which for some reason kills any file transfer between 2 computers using wireless. If I leave the ADSL disconnected the file transfers run fine.
Anybody had this and know what I can do to fix it? I'm moving ISP, but that takes a few days...

I had the same but upgraded the firmware and now it is 100% A-OK.

I've had a DG834GT now for 12 months.

It has been, quite simply, a superb piece of kit. It took me all of 5 minutes to set up, and, coupled with the PCMCIA and PCI 108Mbps NetGear cards I bought, meant we were wireless in about 20 minutes flat.

In those twelve months, the router has frozen just once, necessitating a reboot. Since then it has only needed one scheduled restart after a firmware update.

Even in a 3 bed 19th century cottage with proper thick walls, the wireless signal is "Excellent" as far from the router as you can physically get. Its also "Good" at the end of the (100ft) garden.

In short: HIGHLY recommended.
