does any one know much about the m25 speed cameras between the m40 & a3 junctions? a mate said to me that each bridge that has a camera also has a camera warning sign. are the signs just random or is it true? i tested it a month ago by doing 95 then slowing to 80 for the marked bridges then speeding up inbetween and no ticket has arrived. can anyone confirm this is the case?

I don't know which ones have cameras and which don't. However I was under the impression that the cameras were only operative when a reduction from the national speed limit is showing.

However someone else said that when the NSL is in force they will only flash at 95mph and above. Cartainly I have often been through that area at 95 when the NSL is in operation and never been flashed by a camera or got a ticket. A camera did flash when I was doing over 100 but no ticket.

Don't know off the top of my head, but I have a Valentine One which picks up radar, and tells you which of the conventional speed cameras is live. It picks up the gantry cameras on the M25. The ones that make it go apeshit are just after the Staines turnoff (J13 IIRC) and the Heathrow exits. They're not always on though (in stark contrast to those on the North Circular- pretty much every one is live).

agreed, My snooper S5 has been finding random cameras on the M25 live over the past 3 months.

I do from the A3 round to Junction 14 each day.

It seems to be a bit of a lottery which cameras are live and which not. Certainly the ones around junction 12 seem to be on more than off.

I have only seen them go off when the speed restrictions are in force. Othrwise I tend to go through at about 80 and haven't had any go off on this stretch.

If you want to spot them glance up at the gantrys on the other carrageway. if they are on that side you can bet your pet dogs life that they are on the other one!

I agree with soulpatch, If you want to spot them glance up at the gantry’s on the other carriageway. If they are on that side there's an 8/10 chance that there one on your side too.

Last year I did go past one on the M25 near J13 (clock wise) doing 110 in the rain late at night (around 9pm)and I was flashed, but I think due to the spray coming of the car plus the rain that they couldn’t read the reg on my car as I never got a ticket :-)

I'm not saying drive fast in the rain as it's not the thing to do in bad weather, I know it was the wrong thing to do and thank my lucky stars that I still have a clean licence.

I tell other people to learn to drive according to road and weather conditions, need to listen to myself?

Not true. I do this run regularly on weekends and usually in the very early hours of monday morning. As a point of interest (the road was deserted) I took to simply looking out of the back of the car to check which gantires had cameras, which had signs, did they correspond to the opposite gantries etc. There's no pattern obvious.

Re trigger speeds, I've seen some flash at suprisingly low speeds even under NSL conditions. I'd say 80-85 is risky if you're not a naturally lucky person. I've never tried more than 75, needless to say I've never been done.

Pretty obvious. They're boxes on top of the gantry with a thingy that flashes and takes piccys every now and then.

Some on the M25 are not so obvious. A lot on the section with the variable limit are actually built into the overhead gantries behind the signs. This means you cannot tell from the front whether a gantry has a camera or not.

Tim was asking about the other side of the road, on your side of the road I don't think there's any way to spot them in advance without some technological help.

if you look carefully, the gantries with cameras have an extra bit above the speed signs. I counted 12 between M3 and M40 the other day.

Strangely none are yellow?

I do Staines to Leatherhead and back every day - and you can (usually) see the grey tops of the cameras as you approach them as mentioned previously...however most of the time I go through the cameras I dream of doing over 30mph...blummin' rush hour!

Well I regularly go through there under NSL conditions at speeds in excess of 85 and have never been ticketed. The only time I was flashed I was doing in excess of 100mph, and no ticket arrived although I did worry for a couple of weeks!

I think I read somewhere when they were first installed that one of the conditions for their installation was that they would only be used to enforce the temporary limits. However don't quote me!

I don't know anyone who has been done whilst the NSL is in force, but maybe someone does?

Have to look firly carefully, which is difficult at speed! You can see them from the other carriageway but matching them up to remember when going back is too much for my brain! Easier to stick to the limit showing. My Geodesy signals that all the gantries are live, which I don't believe.

And whilst we are all too busy playing spot the speed camera we end up causing more danger by not concentrating on the road.

When will the government realise that speed cameras are not really much of a deterant but merely a distraction?
