Camera van question.
Discussion
Earlier today I was plodding along the M4 at the legal limit, when I came upon a stretch where the matrix signs were at 50mph*. I slowed to around 60mph, continued for maybe a mile then as I come round the corner there was a South Wales scam van (and not in their usual place nr Pen Coed either). I just maintained my speed and thought nothing of it for a bit....
Then I wondered, can the operative "enforce" the 50mph limit on the matrix? (Temporary roadworks, no other 50 signs at all)

a. if they were the normal ones in the middle of the carriageway without a red circle around them then no, just advisory.
b. If they were the newer type with the big red circle around then they are mandatory.
So if it was a. and you get a ticket for doing anthing <77MPH you will want to tell them where to shove it :-)

If they are advisory, what's the relevance of the 77?
77 is the 10% + 2 limit by the guidelines. So on an M-Way 77 or less shouldnt see you nicked by a scamera. Of course they are only guidelines and if its a slow day they might go for a lower number than 77.
But if the matrix signs were flashing 50 its a caution/warning you can still legally push on at 70. Of course if you then go on to have an accident at said speed insurers and plod are bound to ask a few searching questions about why you ignored the warning...

70+10%+2 equals 79, if my maths are correct.
If the advisory signs saying 50 are up you are likely to get done for anything over 70 forget the 10%+2 bollox that all goes out the window when the advisories are on. I actually know someone who got a tug at bang on 70 on a motorway from a marked traffic car and got a fixed penalty for it. Probably didn't help that when he got pulled he was a smart arse and said to the copper "I saw the signs but they are advisory, I took the advise onboard, assessed it and decided it was crap advise so ignored it" kerr ching when take this little slip of paper as further advise sir.
