I'll post this just in case anyone else has the same frustration. Ever since purchasing my dick the steering wheel has been around to the left, only ever so slightly but always to the left, never the right and the car has had a tendancy to wander left.
Since my ownership I've put pss9's and new lower wish bones and had the alignment done no less than 5 times by different companies and the result has ALWAYS been the same; straightish for a very short duration and then off to the left. Sometimes after a trackday the wheel would be 10 degrees off (which i put down to tyre wear on one side)

Anyway, cut a long story short in a last ditched attempt to solve this niggle I welded the two pieces of the track rod damper together thus bypassing the rubber damper - VOILA!

I'll now upgrade to the RS versions when i can next face another alignment. The steering feels scalpel sharp and it's all love and kisses again!

Can you explain what the track rod damper is?

I have a 993 C4 and it has always exhibited a similar characteristic although not as severe as yours sounds.

It wasn't ever severe, just niggling.

Easy check is to have someone wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while you look at the end of the steering rack where the track rod end enters the steering damper (it's got rubber around the metal bit ) See if the track rod end is effectively going in and out of the damper.

Had the same problem on my 993 RS, it took three front end geometry checks to sort the problem. mad

PP, get the car up on a ramp, (if possible you need to find a ramp with a raised centre section that will allow you drive on it so that the inside of the wheel is parallel and against the raised portion of the ramp)

The reason for this is you want to actually stop the road wheel from turning left to right when you attempt turn the steering wheel.

Whilst you try to turn the wheel your assistant needs to inspect both ends of the steering rack where the track rods comes out of it. You will see the track rod goes into what looks like a larger diameter section of steel (whilst the outer diameter is indeed steel, the material that seperates the two components is bonded rubber)

The bonding of the rubber to the steel fails over time and allows the two parts to move independantly of each other, this can be clearly seen if the damper has failed !

One was worse than the other on my car, (it had been heavily tracked) On high speed corners (which overcomes the friction between the two parts under heavy load) the steering wheel was "moving" away from its central position anything up an 1/8 of a turn both to the right or to the left.

Doesn't do the much for the precision of the steering does it Ace ?
I'm not sure if it's applicable to the Turbo, but the RS standard part can be replaced with the 993 Cup part, it solves the problem period and improves steering precision and feel (at the expense of a bit more kickback through the steering wheel )

Good luck.

Fellas,

I don't know if I am having the same problem or not. When I bought my 993 RS the steering wheel was slightly to the left when driving in a straight line. I got the tracking/alignment done and things were fine. On my return from Spa the wheel is again cocked to the left in straight ahead driving. Why does it "slip" after a while?

JS - that's the f'ing issue i've been having all along! Everytime I'd get it aligned (3 times this year!) i'd say the same thing 'I do a track day and then the wheel is on the wonk'. Tracking would be done, fine for another ten minutes. It's been my only gripe with ownership and i've even been considering buying my own alignment equipment as i've spent £800 this year alone trying to resolve it.

Yes I did. However, in a true demonstration of British reserve and politenes I deceided it was best not to mention it.

First thing I heard after purchasing my first porker was 'look at that dick'; i assumed they were talking about the car so it's kinda stuck. ALso used to describe the bad boys turbo2 from memory.

I have a new set of rack ends somewhere; Alan if I send you a photo can you post a link to it so that people can understand where the problem is?

Funnily enough I think in the 911/930 era people used to replace the 911 track rods with 930 track rods to get away from the slight vagueness the 911 track rods offered.

Thanks for th etips guys. Now that I know about it i won't be able to leave it alone, so that's a few more quid to be spent.

Mine shows similar symptoms. The paper work acompanying it showed that the previous owner had spent dosh recently on the alignment. The PPI also picked up a slight "tracking to the left". I subsequently had new suspension fitted including lower wishbones. Full tracking and a new set of tyre slater the car was perfect for a short time. One track day later the steering is very slightly to the left. It's not a great deal, just enough to be irritating.
