I have thought of a personalised number plate which I would love to stick on my car.

Where would be the best place to call about it? I would need to know if the plate has ever been registered and if not then I would like to buy it over the phone (don't want the person the other end saying 'sorry sir that's sold' and the buying it themselves to sell on).

Has anyone else thought of a plate and purchased it straight through a call centre/business?

Thanks

whatever

Depends what you're after, of course, but have a look on the dvla site first. You can search on that.

I too had suspicions about ringing some broker, or even using their site searches.

Cheers, just searched on their 'www.dvla-som.co.uk/search/index.php' site and it said the registration is unavailable, is that its the end of it? no witty plate for me?

In school the girls always said I was the devil (I was a but naughty and one god-squad chick kept crossing her fingers at me) just because I had a goatee and spiked hair! I want to buy a Tuscan and what plate would suit either the car or me better than LU51 FER. But looks like this ain't happening!

Related question.

Now that all plate makers are 'registered', does anyone know anywhere that will allow you to dictate the letter/number spacing on a plate? (so it spells what you want it to).

DVLA have either already sold it or they have held it back on the grounds of decency and will not sell it ever in case it offends Mrs Miggins of Acacia Avenue. Eg J1HAD and P155OFF were held back. Can't imagine F11CKU will ever be issued either.

Thanks, might have to get it and bend the 'V' to a 'U' ha ha. Or wait until someone comes to sell it (hope it hasn't been held back).

Damn, doesn't look as good as I had hoped, I'll give them a call in the morning anyway to see about it (worth it anyway for £500) and ask about whether they withheld the one with a U. Thansk for your help mate, would never have thought of using a V.

Always check the DVLA site first. Most dealers advertise plates which are available directly from the DVLA but up to 50% more. If you go to them they simply buy it from the DVLA first then pass it on to you with a large mark up.

The DVLA do hold back certain numbers on decency grounds. They have slipped up on a few occasions though, letting PEN1S through was a good one. Apparently the owner regulary getts a lot of stick of old ladies for being disgusting!

The guy that owned / owns this is Steve Parrish (truck racer / occasional Top Gear presenter) and it is actually PEN15

The story is that when he was racing for Mercedes he was given an SL500 "company" car - Mrs Parrish would nick this all the time, so he put that plate on it to stop his wife nicking his car!!!

Sorry about the anorak rustling, hope you could hear me OK!

The DVLA now release '666' plates, so you could go down that dastardly route.

There is an urban myth that cars bearing the number of the beast are involved in more accidents though...

If that route fails email me and I'll give you some local contacts here who are not subject to UK laws.

There was a feature on a supposedly haunted Ford Capri on 5th gear some time ago. That has a reg with 666 on it. The owner kept getting pestered by some gothic couple who wanted to have sex it it. The guy ended up having it exorcised.
