annoyed at the telly last night - the prime minister thing..
Discussion
Can't remember the program name, but the 'little voice' actress plays a woman who somehow gets into No.10.
Quite an interesting storyline. ON exiting the G8, the primeminister announces without warning that car use is to be banned on Wednesdays, points, fines, bans, etc for any use of a car AT ALL on that day from now on.
Now that should make an interesting bit of drama, and I expected an indepth bit of research behind the following 50 minutes of telly. What would ACTUALLY happen.
Well, people used the bus and moaned a bit, but then the country decided it was a resounded success, so successful that our G8 neighbours all decided to follow suite as well.
Good bit of research eh!
now what would actually happen?

Yes, I saw some of that too. I, for one, would be like the angry woman in the car who used her car regardless and threatened to take the Govt to the ECHR once she'd reached 12 points!
A load of old shite - something about car pollution contributing 20% of all carbon emmissions.....is that true?? I thought not...

I think the impact would be cataclysmic. (<spelling!!!>
take holidays and airports as 1 example.
How many people going to the airport by car on a wednesday?
Can't use the car so taxi - can't get one,
public transport - not really available or an alternative, plus what about your luggage?
So, that's all those holidays ruined then. Who pays for that?

What do you expect with the Blair Broadcasting Corp? Actual honesty? The truth ? No chance. Left wing bollox all the way.
What would actually happen? Well, millions of people would fail to get to work/school.. The country would fall apart. The lost revenue in fuel duty alone would cause us to pull out of Iraq.
What a load of crap. That program is utter cobblers, a total waste of a good actress.
I live a mile and a half from the nearest road. To get to my office six miles away by bus takes between about two to fourteen hours depending on the time of the journey. The nearest bus stop is half a mile from the office and entails a walk along the uncut grass verge of a dangerous high-speed dual carriageway. If this prog is subliminal neuro-linguistic programming on behalf of Bliar, then can somebody suggesting how I should get to work of a morning? Perhaps I'll buy a commercial vehicle like an HGV!

Transport produces about 20% of man-made CO2 in the UK. Private cars about a third of that. In any case, man-made CO2 is negligible in the grander scheme of things, but of ccourse they wouldn't say that, would they?!

Well you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. Yes, there'll be a few people like you* who can't get to work by public transport. But the message is: move to where you can.
*everyone not living in large conurbations, so about 10% of the population. Not worth worrying about when the other 90% all vote for you anyway.
hmm well its a bigger issue than that...I live in a large ish town (11,000 people) between two big towns (about 8 miles either way down dual carriageway). Yet I work as a consultant visiting customers all over the south, all 50 or miles away. there is no alternative to the car. I did some digging and to get to my most regular client who is 49 miles away using only public transport would entail a journey time of approc 4 hours each way at a cost of approx £60. In the car its 1 hour 15 mins +/- 15 mins depending on traffic at a fuel cost of about £16.
Its the same for most of my clients, the only ones I use the train for are in london and even then I have to drive to the railway station.
ANd most of the people I know are in a similar situation where they simply cant reach their regular place of work by public transport.

I realise your post is tongue-in-cheek but that is the reality of the situation. You have a government that wants people to leave the countryside in favour of the cities but (due to pressure from the green lobby) won't allow any houses to be built. Force people to live within walking distance of their jobs but don't provide anywhere for them to live...
