Starter solenoid

New Griff owner here - when i try and start the car, sometimes there is just a heavy click and nothing happens. Backing off and trying again always gets a start after a couple of goes but its not reassuring.

Is the starter solennoid separate to the starter motor or one of those piggy back ones ? Can they be replaced without replacing the whole starter ?

Can the starter be got out easy enough ?

Hi, I had the same about two months ago. I just changed both. The starter motor has the solenoid built into the side and is a lot easiler to just change both at the same time, It is a little bit fiddly, but the bible tells you everything you need to know. Just jack the car up disconect the battery and then it's just one cable and two bolts, Time about and hour cost between 50 and 75 depends on make an model.

Do a search for "hot start" it doesnt always have to be when things are hot as there is no relay in the starter solenoid circuit and of course there should be.
