Anyone else watching this? Did you just see them doing an assessment on a driver on public roads during the day? 110mph+ shown on the cars speedo by the cameraman?

Jeez.

I always tell myself not to watch these programmes, there just ultimate piss boilers! Coppers doing a sterling job then having the CPS spit the scum back onto the streets. At least when when you watch the American ones and you see someone sentenced to 160 years (no joke) you get a certain sense of satisfaction that a difference is being made.

I don't think anyone from the non criminal world would be against taking these scumbags out with RPG's!!!. Shoot the censored dead, nice & simple justice, never to be seen on the streets again.

Gets me really wound up when you hear all they get done for in the end.

Did ya see that kid in the stolen Volvo that crashed into
another car just under the bridge.
Mr Wayne Kerr was blubbing like a baby - not so feckin' hard now
eh?

Unfortunately the guy he hit spent 2 months in hospital after
breaking his leg in the accident and being trapped in the car
for ages as well.

I wonder what the scrote got for that???

Must be bloody sole destroying for the cops.

Well only the bobbies on the beat who walk about....

But you're right; why the judiciary don't hand down proper sentences for repeat offenders is beyond me. If someone's caught doing something for even the third or fourth time they need properly sorting out. Like 10 years hard labour kind of sorting out. Why is it that everybody you talk to KNOWS this to be true, yet there's this little minority of hang wringers talking about "rehabilitation" and giving them more cuddles and ice creams instead?

I think it's possible to diagnose somebody with Persistent Scumbag Disorder (PSD) and to administer the correct "treatment" in this day and age.

The spokesidiot for BRAKE annoyed me.

Her attitude was that it is fine for the police to catch people who steal rob murder etc, as long as they don't chase them in a car.

Yes the guy who was hit by the Volvo was in hospital for two months, and he has my sympathy, but if we don't chase the criminals they will cause much more harm to people in the long run.

Yes, I watched it, and I think it was a repeat of a programme shown some weeks ago.

I think the driver you refer to was undergoing his three yearly assessment/check test.

110 mph you say. OK, so what? They have to be properly checked out at the speeds they may be required to use in the course of their duties.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

That's right he was doing his 3yr test. Great to see that bit of it - I found it REALLY interesting.

I think they recognised that was a bit borderline, and to my way of thinking it called into question what is officially regarded as the correct overtaking technique. I'm not saying that the correct method is wrong in general, but it might have limitations in particular situations, and I feel that was perhaps one of them.

It is all very well closing to the contact position, having a preliminary look, going fully offside with matched speed, doing the 'is it on or isn't it' deliberations, deciding that it's 'OK, and then going. All of that takes time, and whilst you have to satisfy yourself that the overtake will be safe, and that it will not upset other road users, you might find that you've lost too much time, and what would have been safe becomes more questionable, or indeed not on after all.

My preference is to weigh things up on the approach to a target vehicle, collecting information and making/adjusting your plans as you go, and if you're satisfied with the whole scene, then get straight on with it as one continuing sequence. To be honest that is quite often how I seek to do it, rather than go through what feels like an unduly time consuming series of stages.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Importantly, they did recognise that Jag overtake (and that the Jag kinda saved them because he slowed down so they could get in), but it's GOOD that they're analysing it, and showing the public that they're analysing it (if you see what I mean).

Do think there was a couple of dodgy overtakes by the guy in the Green impreza though while following the red Mx5 (I think it was an Mx5). Especially going round the left hander with cars on both sides of the road.

Anyhow - regarding the overtaking technic, I see what you're saying above, but the problem with maintaining that speed is that you have no room for error; and that is the crucial point, I believe. There is no "what if it goes wrong" escape plan - where as if you're matched speed and on the offside, your escape plan is to get back behind the car you are to overtake.

Best regards all
Tony

(PS: Good discussions, I like threads like this thumbup)

Yes Tony, I accept your cautionary point about the overtaking technique I described, and this has quite rightly been mentioned previously in various forums. It has to be applied carefully and you need to cater for the overtake not being 'on' after all, in which case you must retain the ability to reduce speed and get in behind your target vehicle. It is just one of the many judgements we have to make.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

It's an interesting topic point; the ideal overtaking technique works very well when you're behind the car you then wish to overtake. However, it's when you come up (at speed) behind the car, and an overtake appears to be on that you then make that judgement Dave (I assume I understand you correctly?).

As you say, make the call at the time based on everything around you thumbup
