Change keyboard layout from English US to English UK.
It'll be in the settings somewhere but not knowing which operating system you are using I can't give you specifics.

Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options

Set "Standards and formats", "Location", and "Language for non-unicade programs" (on the Advanced tab) to "English (United Kingdom)"

That should do it I belive.

What happens when you try to type a # (on mine it's a key next to the right shift key) does that produce a £? If yes can you live with that until it's sorted.

Or you could just pull both keys off and swap them over

Ok same as before, this time go to Languages tab.
Click Details and another window should appear with "Text Services and Input Language"

Make sure the Default input Language is "English (United Kingdom) - United Kingdom" and in "Installed Services" the only language there is "English (United Kingdom)" if it's anything else click 'Add' select the right language and remove the wrong one.

God, how things have changed from KEYB=UK :S

Can you solve my remaining irritation: when I send an email it uses Times New Roman font which I dislike so I alter it laboriously e-mail by e-mail to the more modern Verdana. How do I alter it to Verdana as the default choice?

outlook - tools, options, mail format, stationary and fonts, "New mail message Font" - change away......

ahhh.... hotmail within internet explorer?

If that's the case, I don't know if you can set a default font in hotmail.. I'm sure someone that uses hotmail will be along shortly..

Thanks, Trooper. I had a look and followed the instructions - that's what I do normally but it doesn't fix the font permanently. It reverts to New Roman as soon as I move on to write the next e-mail.

Are you using Hotmail or Windows Live Mail? It's just WLM is definetly using Tahoma as the default font and playing around in the options I can't see anyway of changing the profile and/or defaults to use a different font for every mail.

I'd assume being "more primative" Hotmail doesn't have this feature either. Sorry.
