Hi, could anyone point me in the right direction for a cheap'ish laptop for my daughter - she has recently started secondary school and there is more an more homework involving Word and Excel plus the need to search t'Internet (!) that I thought it made sense for her to have her own 'starter' laptop for her room and wherever.

I already have a wireless setup at home so I would need that for her laptop and ideally something that is reliable and tough?!

Any ideas would be much appreciated - looking to spend as little as possible, but certainly under £400, so s/h is an option.

Thanks
Nick

Dell will I am sure be recommended and probably quite rightly in this price bracket. However I currently use a cheap ACER and tbh it is great. Nice and slim in comparison to the Dell's recently bought by a few rellies.

This one looks fairly similar to mine, probably if anything a better spec as mine is now 18months old:

www.comet.co.uk/cometbrowse/product.do?sku=356140

My policy with lappies is buy cheap, abuse and not fret about them and throw them away. Having said that this Acer is showing no signs yet of needing to be changed.

Take a look at Dabs.com, just got my Mum a nice cheap Lenovo from there, nicely specced piece of kit too.

Consider getting a desktop.

It will be cheaper, it can work on your wireless network.
She's just started secondary school so where is she going to head off to with this laptop? If its a state school then not to there. It'll get nicked and/or smashed in to a million peices inside of a month. If its a private school then maybe... but talk to them about a child brining in something like that.

Also a £400 desktop will have more features and grunt than a £400 laptop usually

We are looking into getting my kids a laptop each, if anything to enable me to be able to use my own laptop sometimes.

We have been looking at the local PC shop (they also sponsored the local footie team, dunno if they still do) I first used the company when it was a little two man band. Afterserice is great, staff very helpful and friendly and prices not too bad.

The ones we are looking at are about £300 each. But then I haven't looked at the site for a while as we are not getting them till late rin the year.

Anyway the company is called P3 Computers, based in Burnley.

They built my b/f a custom desktop system, cost about £2000, but it's as specced up as was feasibly possible at the time!

We used www.shoplaptop.co.uk for my 80 year old mother in laws laptop ealier this year.

Under £400 for a Fujitsu Siemens wireless celeron, widescreen, DVD Rom and 512Mb ram.

It is so good I am going to buy another one for the office!

Are these any good?
HP Pavilion DV6152EU
AMD Turion 64 x2 Dual Core
100 GB HD
1024 MB
256MB graphics card
TV Tuner
Webcam

£680

Just noticed 2hr battery life - is that for real?????

I'd normally go for Dell, but I can't get near the spec for this for the price...... (oh, it must have a dedicated graphics card for games)

Wow, thanks for the responses guys & girls!

I must admit, i was thinking along the cheap & cheerful route too and the only reason for the laptop versus a desktop was that she can use it at the outlaws etc should she want to - the space that a desktop requires was alos a consideration, I mean where would she put all of her make-up, perfume, pictures of Orlando Bloom etc...??!!

I will have a look at your various suggestions - thanks again.

Cheers
Nick
