I had mine done, replaced the mechanical pump with an electric one. You can read all about it here

The bill was just over a grand (Harrogate HC) but I had some other work done and I had a ferry to catch too so I was in a hurry. The pump is a Citroen/Peugeot one - see the parts sticky - and I think the hardest part of the job was mounting the pump somewhere sensible on the frame.

You need plent of muscle's plus the rack would need replacing after every 1000 miles or so.

Apparently the earlier PAS pumps had a small-ish woodruff key that tended to shear, later (post '97-ish) had a bigger key and are ok.

Mine went earlier this year and I replaced it with the electric option. I removed the old PAS pump, was a bit of a pain but can be done. I had to undo the drivers side engine mount and jack the engine up out of the way to get the pump out. You could re-fit it the same way.

Have others that have gone electric removed their mechanical pumps? I figured it was only a matter of time before the pump spinning with no oil in it siezed up

I drove the car for a week or so with no PAS, too heavy to be safe. The Speed 6 had more turns lock to lock so might be better.

yes The engine needs to come out.

I snapped my pas pump shaft at the beginning of September and as it was an old style pump that isn't available anymore.........

I needed the new style pas pump.
This then meant I needed the newer style sump as well.
This then meant I needed new oil pipework to fit.
This then meant I needed a new oil cooler too......

That was a bloody expensive shaft.......

Could you not have got the pump overhauled, or a new shaft made?

I could of if I'd had the luxury of time, but I had less than 2 weeks to get her back on the road as I was going to Scandinavia and the cost of cancelling the ferries and hotels that were already booked was quite horrific. It was a nice spot though between the rock and the hard place.....

Ah, a commercial concideration justification.
