Got an Xp upgrade and installed it OK.

Can get on the internet OK with Explorer and my ADSL modem.

When I try to validate my copy I get an error message saying it can't connect to the internet. Still does it when I tell it to detect my proxy settings.

Any ideas?

If I don't validate within 30 days does it all stop working?

Sounds odd, think you can validate by phone though so probably the easiest option if everything else is working ok. Should throw a number at you if you click the right options (which I can't remember)

Phone validation is easy, its just a robot voice and your keypad - 5 minutes max.

XP still works after 30 days, but as mentioned just give them a call. Don't worry they won't ask you 64 million questions only a few (from a script; Indian Call Centre)

"please give me the first set of numbers on your screen"
"Please wait while that number is being validated, this will take a few seconds. Can you tell me if this version of XP is installed on any other machine?"
"ok your number is valid, i am going to give read to you your number to enter into the boxes 3 at a time"

Enter the numbers in click on next and your done (after you've click on finish)

The American call centre might ask you a few more questions as they have a better grasp on the English lanugage, but it's all scrpted based.

yep.
I've had a base unit sitting on my desk for a month and a half, not activated (or connected to the net for that matter) and it was ok with MS Office and other apps.
I phoned up in the end to activate it as i couldn't get a net connection in that office

It does but gives you a warning on startup this is not a validated copy of XP, please check where you purchased this from as it could be a pirate copy etc etc

never restarted mine though.
Oh and if your computer is attached to the net, you can't get updated for XP.

Thanks.

I suspect it may be a firewall problem as I haven't reinstalled Zonealarm and that may still be running somewhere.

It wouldn't know that it was OK to let the activation programme access the internet.

Validation/WGA yes you just get the message, but without activation it won't let you log on untill you activate after the 30 days have expired, that's allways been my experience (unless you don't reboot after the 30 days lol)

I assumed the OP meant activation from the way he described it...

Weird confused

Do you have a firewall in your router?

If you go down the phone call route, it may be interesting to see if you can update XP. There was some variants of Trojans/Virus's that blocked access to the microsoft domain to stop any security patching.

Yes there is a built in firewall thingy.

Do you think that's it?

I probably really need to re-install lots of my software even though most things seem to be working.

I'll try re-installing my router software as it has a self-configuring setup programme so hopefully it won't be too painful.

Right - got internet access sorted after installing 61 update files!

Now it's telling me that the number of times I can activate windows with this product key has been exceeded.

Where's that paddle!

Do a telephone activation, usually they'l just ask you if its installed on any other PC's, tell them it isn't and you've had some PC trouble etc. no worries. I've been quite pushy with them in the past and they still didn't send SWAT round hehe
