Excuse my butting in but on a related note- I'm thinking of ditching my SKY subscription as we only tend to watch the stuff that would be available on Freeview anyway. Would I still be able to use the SKY+ to record the free channels I guess I will receive?
I think not...? Actually will I get any channels at all!?

Apparently you can buy a card that allows all the free channels, but none of the others, i also hear about a next to nothing subscription, might be wrong though

If you cancel your subscription the card you have does this anyway. We got bored paying for a 2nd box we never used, but now have a freeview satellite box downstairs.Plotloss said:
Sky+ requires two downlinks from the dish, if you've got two drops then it should work after a call to Sky.
As far as I'm aware the entire Sky+ functionality won't function without the subscription. Either £10 a month or free if you've got 2 premium channels in your package.

Yup, have the lot at the moment but I can't help but think a couple of months without SKY+ would pay for a DVD recorder and then no more £40odd each and every month for generally not much.
I keep thinking the same, as although it's nice to have the other channels the ones I mostly watch are free or covered by the TV license. I perhaps watch 10% of the actual package channels, so they work out very expensive. The think I'd miss though is the ease of use with Sky+, it's ability to record any channel without issue - but I guess the new twin-tuner DVB boxes do that just as well...
I have the Humax PVR9200T. Takes it about 5 minutes from startup to download The EPG which is currently 8 days. (The capacity allows for a 14 day one but it isn't sent out yet). Once downloaded you can bring it up and search for programs and press ok to add them to the 20 event Schedule.

Call SKY and they will issue you with a Free card.

If you want Sky+ functionality but with Freeview then there are several PVRs with twin Freeview tuners in them that do the same thing.
Edit: Like the Humax that telecat mentioned, in fact.

And no further payment to get the Updates and EPG either
