On the way home to bournemouth last night as I approached the Castle Dean Flyover, just after where the speed limit drops to 50 I spotted the local scamera van. It was parked on the grass bank to my left, well back from the edge of the road, side on to the traffic. By the side of the road they had a device on a large tripod (unlike the mini-gatso's that they used to use) and bothe operators were sat in the van (it looked like they were reading the paper)....

Is this an automated device that requires no operator (like the mini gatso, but designed to photograph the front of speeding cars) or is it the standard LTI20/20, unmanned because the operators were on tea break????

Don't think so - the are usually on bridges and usually have plod waiting down the road to pull offenders.... The vane was definitely the Dorset Safety Camera Patnership one...

I've seen this up here. They put it on the pavement and left it do do it's work whilst they chatted and looked nonchalant. It looked like a truvelo but must work like a gatso.

So what about the ACPO Code that the officer must make a prior opinion that someone is speeding - the device is only there to back up that opinion???

How can he/she form the opinion whilst reading "The Sun"???
