How long does a starter motor last?

Seem to remember there was batch of poor quality motors a while back, a lot were lasting only a week or so. It might be that you got a good bad one if that makes sense, in that I mean a bad one that lasted longer than most of the bad ones. Did Austec's fit and supply the one 10 months ago?

No it was done by a company down in Tonbridge Kent.Thing is i asked for the old one back and austecs said they would have to put a surcharge on it because it was on an exchange basis.I dont think i could be bothered with all the hassle.BLUETHUNDER said:

Austecs said that there'd be a surcharge, but a company in Tonbridge changed it over?
If it was only 10 months ago it was covered with a guarantee.
As far as I know Eurolec are the recognised reconditioners of Cerb' starters.

Not a lot you can do about that. Yes, they are supplied on an exchange basis.

With all due respect, a thread on how long a starter lasts doesn't mean much.
Rather frustratingly although we have had this sort of thread a lot we have never had a poster that actually finds out why the starter has gone, or even what gone means. The Cerb seems to have gained a reputation for eating starters, but why, and whether its deserved is anyones guess.
For some this could be the clutch, for some it could mean the windings, possibly siezed due to the heat and bearing damage, or good old poor supply from the battery / poor earth and the hapless victim finds an unscrupulous dealer who finds it better to exchange a motor than a simple replacement wire.
I suspect the last happens to quite a few, but its all guesswork, as no-one posts any more detail, and seems to go for an exchange/replacement/dealer without finding out

Given that I know nothing...... I thought I'd read on many occasions in these hallowed pages that the 70 degree V8 created a heat well which fried the starter structure and anything attached to it. Am I under a misapprenesion ?
Also, aren't all V8 Cerbie starters from Nissan ?
