.......but the tick over still has a mind of its own and is wilfully doing whatever it pleases.

It obviously needs teaching a bloody good lesson.

Steve Heath mentions a movement/road speed sensor thingummybob but doesn't say where it can be found.confused

Did you reset the ECU after you cleaned the stepper motor? - if not turn off ignition, disconnect the ECU, go have a cuppa and then reconnect.

Disconnect the stepper motor plug once the engine is idling steadily and see if that cures the problem. That'll tell you if you the problem is in the idle control system, or something more fundamental. (If the problem goes away when you disconnect the stupid-bl**dy-unreliable-waste-of-space stepper motor ranting then you might consider just leaving it permanently disconnected, but either way at least you know where to look for the problem.)

Where do you disconnect the ECU (or just is it OK to disconnect one side of the battery)?

Just unplug it. Disconnecting the battery will do it but it also resets the alarm.

It has a fifty-pin connector. The cable entry side of this connector hooks into the corresponding ECU connector. The other end is released first by squeezing the sprung plastic clip.
