Rear Arms

Now Ive got more room in the garage I am looking at a few jobs on the S,I have been given an old s2 rear suspension arm which I was going to renovate,but looking at it, it really is a bad design and just begs to rot (why did they leave the end of that main tube open??)
I was wondering if anyone had fabricated the main section out of box section tapered down to size with tapped holes for the shimmed mount.
It would seem to make more sense than having number of open areas that can fill with water and mud and rot through or am I missing something??
I could buy a new one but the price seems a bit over the top for what it is,and it would still have the same susceptible design.Plus i saw one recently and the Tube had to be cut down to get the nuts on the rear of the Hub,not good for the money really, but I dont know where it was from.

I won't say where it was from, but it was a bu**er to remove the surplus material and why oh why would they be supplied in 'white'
