tire sizes, yet again

I know there was a thread recently about this but i can't seem to find it.

I have 18 inch spiders on my cerb with 225/35 on the fronts. saturday i had the rears replaced as they were getting close to looking like racing slicks, i asked the guy if i could increase the tire size on the front to 235/40 as the 225s seem a bit narrow for the wheel (not offering much protection for the wheel and generally looking like the tyre would peel off the rim when cornering hard). he said it would rub on the underside of the wing when cornering hard. has any one gone to 235s on the front and is there a problem with rubbing?

I've got 225's & i wouldn't want any wider, there ain't much room in there.Dont forget the car was originally built with 16" & 17" wheels

Aye if anything the rears are a little over tyre-d tbh. IMHO the rears should be 9" wide.

225's about right for the front, any wider and it will probably start to tram line more (I know I have 255's ont eh front).

mine tramlines like a mo'fo now, but i'm pretty sure the tracking is out as the insides of the fronts are wearing pretty quick. how did you shove 255's under the fronts?

If you increase the width you have to lower the profile, so to go to 235's from 225/35 you'd be looking at a 235/30 NOT a 40 profile. This would then make the wheel more prone to buckling.

Well this is an interesting and pertinant threat to me right now.

I have S-03s on my Cerb, the fronts are 235-40ZR17. On full lock, they DO foul the wheel arch. And it tramlines badly.

I'm in need of a new set of tyres, so was checking online and Eagle F1s are not available in 225-40s. But they are in 235-40s.

The back has 255-40s so thats OK; But what profile would people recommend for the front, if I want 225 width?

I thought the 225's were for the 18" spider fitted cerbs. The 235/40/17 is perfectly normal front for the RL17's afaik.

Just to add to the mayhem, until recently my 4.2 Cerb wore 235/40ZR18 Toyos on the front spiders without any problem (nylon spacer fitted to the steering rack). Wheelarch fouling was not an issue, although admittedly I couldn't fit my fingers between tyre and arch. I've since moved to 225/40ZR18 Goodyear Eagle F1s (GD3) at the front.

I should add that 225 tyres do look a little narrow on the front spiders. The issue, I think, is not so much that the tyres are narrow, but that the front wheel is overwide for the car. 8.5 inch spiders were not original equipment when the Cerbera was penned. I believe Silverstone Performance has sought to address the issue by offering an 8 inch front wheel, which is more appropriately matched for a 225 tyre.

I thought the spiders were 8 inch, not 8.5

235/40/17 for the fronts, 255/40/17 for the rears using the standard RL7's I have been advised. On paper the rears are slightly over tyred at 255 for the rims but in practice they are nice fit IMHO.

John - Spiders fitted to my Cerbera are 8.5Jx18, front and rear. Silverstone Performance's 8 inch front wheel looks to be a better fit for 225 tyres (they offer up to a 9 inch wheel for the rear).

I have spiders fitted four fronts. I use Michelin 235/40
front and 245/40 back.
Look great as fill the wheel arch only slightly rub on full
lock when parking. Had them for over 2 years hardly any wear
will use the same again.
