SEAT Ibiza fuel canister replacement

Time for an obscure question ....

Anyone on the list ever replaced the fuel filter (aluminium canister type, above rear axle) on a 1998 (or thereaboutes) Seat Ibiza (GTi) ?

If so, how the **** do you undo the plastic L shaped connectors on either end without destroying them ? There's like an indented "button" on each one ... do you push that in, pull it out with a screwdriver, what ? Tried everything just short of destroying the connectors ....
