Door release cable busted. Ideas....

Evenin' all

Drivers side door release cable has snapped off 10mm down from the nipple at the handle end.

Anyone know if it's possible to pull the cable through the outer get a new inner made up and thread back down the outer, without the need for removing the centre panel and outer cable

Don't mind if it has to be done just hoping I can be lazy and simply thread a new one through (ever the optimist)

Anyone been there done / not done that

You could try a proven method of replacing a broken accelerator cable.

Stongly attach a suitable length of wire or twine (natural Jute or similar) to the broken end of the cable- it might be a good idea to lubricate the twine. If you knot it, smooth over the knot with electrical tape- tapered down on each side.

Then carefully pull the cable through from the good end. Attach replacement cable (Vauxhall accelerator cable or similar) to the twine in the same way, and reverse the proceedure. et voila, worth giving it a go.

I'd be very surprised if there was enough room inside the outer to feed two inners knotted together. If you can still get at the broken end then perhaps you could clean it up, butt the new inner cable to it and tape the two cables together. Alternatively, a technique I've used with throttle cable inners is just to tape over the end of the new inner to stop the frayes edges from catching, and then carefully push it down through the outer. On the throttle cable it's a slow and tedious job because it keeps catching, maybe the door cable will be much easie, on the other hand it may be even worse. If all else fails you can take the outer off the car completely, once it's straight it's much easier to feed the new inner through it.

Peter, you're right. I've just realised that my post is nonsense as he wants to try and thread wire cable through the outer plastic/rubber surround in situ.

Please disregard what I said- but it is a viable way of replacing the accelerator cable..

I had exactly the same thing happen on mine...it's a real bugger to fix.

I had a bit of extra cable at the latch end, so I created some slack that end allowing me to (eventually) feed the broken end back through the handle. I then secured it with a small electrical termination block stripped of it's plastic surround. I did have to lift up the center console and remove the heater control panel tho'.

Problem solved !!

Thought i'd check it out as I finished work early today, whilst you good folks were mulling it over

Had sufficient spare cable at the latch end, to slacken off the securing widget, pushed some spare back up the outer and after much fannying about, managed to re-thread the cable through the handle. Secured with a Dolomite Sprint heater cable securing widget. ( I knew keeping all those spares form 15 years of Sprint ownership would come in handy. Front tie rod rubber bushes make perfect Griff exhaust mounts aswell)

A reasonable quick and cost free fix. Another "Heath Robinson Racing" product

So if anyone has this happens to them. Check your spare cable at the catch end and hope your busted end is right near the handle.
