1999 3cylinder Trophy maintained by myself last seven years with 12000 miles on clock. I realise it has 3 carbs but it seems as though main jet blocked(impossible as one jet would cause only misfire). Sometimes stalls in traffic, erractic running. When opened up no bother. Starts first time. Tickover varies when warm and sometimes stops. Side stand switch ok and new plugs fitted 2000 miles ago. Think it must be electrical problem, but what? Anybody any ideas other than a box of matches and a gallon of petrol?

Not actually tinkered with a Triumph triple myself but from general experience it is always best to eliminate basic problems first before replacing expensive items, so....

First I would check the plug leads. Did the problem start after you changed the plugs?
Second, how old is the battery? Often a weak battery will induce all kinds of erratic problems. The bike seems to do very low mileage so do you keep it connected to a 'optimate' type conditioning charger? Even so if the battery is 3 years old or more replace it.
Third, check battery connections, take off and shine up the contacts. Carefully trace and check all the other wiring connectors on the ignition circuit
Fourth, drain the carb float bowls to get rid of any water / condensation (this can get in there even if the bike is stored in the garage for long periods)
The bike seems to do very low mileage, is the petrol fresh?
It could just be that the carbs have gone out of balance, or if the bike has been standing unused for a while, the fuel will evaporate from the carbs and leave a sticky residue that can block or partially block a jet.

Sorry if I have stated the obvious and you have already checked all these.

My next step would be to go through all the fault finding checks in a Haynes manual if you have one, they are usually quite helpful but don't rely on them 100%!

Best of luck and keep us posted.

It could be crap in the carbs - have you run it on reserve recently? Mine had been running worse and worse recently after going onto reserve a few times. It wouldn't idle on choke very well, heavy smell of petrol, heavy fuel consumption and I would have to nurse the throttle when the bike was hot and stopped at ligths, etc to keep from stalling.

Dealer managed to sort it out with a service kit, new air filter (after the last one was ruined by petrol) and flushing the tank of crap.

Was advised by the dealer, not to go onto reserve in future or replace the tank to get rid of the rust particles.

Hi, two suggestions to get use of your reserve back without the horrendous expense of replacing the tank.
1. Fit a in line fuel filter (only about £5)
2. Seal the inside of the current tank with a product such as 'Petseal' which effectively 'varnishes' the inside of the tank. (about £20)

Great photo's on your profile!

At this time of the year it could be carb icing-even though its not that cold the extra damp we have at the mo may cause it. it the venturi of the carb its a lot colder as the fuel absorbs some heat too.
Have you removed the float bowls? i had a cbr that ran well but cut out sometimes turned out the bowls were nearly full with crud.

1. Needs two in line filters - but not enough room to fit both of them.
2. I'll investigate.

cheers,
