Driving/fog lights

Are the Cibie airport lights (the rectangular ones below the pib lights) meant to just be driving lights that are only used on full beam? Or can they be used as front fogs? If so has anyone go them wired up as such?

Some cars have them as driving lights, some as fogs.
mine are fogs are wired seperately though

On the 350i, they were front fogs, on the 400se, they are driving lights.

On the 1990 350SE they are driving lights operated with main beam (no seperate switch)
Also act as daytime headlight flash as the pods light but stay down.
Wiring diagram and copy of factory service bull'n seams to support this as norm. along with dim/dip.

I wonder how hard it is to wire them up as fog lights as well, there is a spare blanking plate for a switch (where aircon would be, I think) - is it still possible to find switches to match the originals, ideally like the rear fog one with a light.

They are TR7 switches.

They are driving lights originally intended only to operate when main beam is selected. However, I've wired mine up so they still flash using the stalk when needed, but can be operated independently of the other lights via a separate switch on the cowl around the steering column. Handy for being visible i daytime, but without needing to put the pods up.

The beam pattern is different between fog and driving lamps. Fogs are wide with a flat-top beam to pick out kerbs: drives just throw more light at the scenery in general.

Whatever happened to spotlights with a pencil beam, a couple of those'd be nice...
