I use www.smartchoicenet.co.uk for my hosting - initial fee was about £40, and I pay about £8 a month for the space. Domain name wise, they'll be able to sort that out for you too. Funkypaint.com has gone, but the .co.uk is still available.

www.freeparking.co.uk is where I get my domain names. One of the cheapest around and good service too.

They let you use free hosting and divert requests for the URL to the free space, plus you get email aliases etc thrown in.

www.easily.co.uk

Use them to buy web names (£9.99 inc vat for a .co.uk)

You can then get free webspace from many sites and Easily can mask the free webspace URL. So instead of www.freesitehosting.com/newsite/new.htm it will mask this off so you see your desired www.funkypaint.co.uk in the URL. Also people just have to type www.funkypaint.co.uk to go there!

Theres loads of freewebhosting sites around all offering about 20mb of space (more than enough unless you want to host videos). Some have banner advertising but you can get rid of these for about £2-4 per month.

I have to reccomend godaddy.com for buying your domain name - they do not insist you have your hosting with them (lost of places do) and you can administer your domain - also very cheap $8.95 per year for a .com but they don't do any ccTLDs (like co.uk).

For hosting we have strated using webhost4life.com for windows hosting as they do a good deal on sql server, and generally cost can be low if you don't need a sql server db.

Cheers

I'll echo the comments about Easily. Most of my portfolio of names is managed there. They may not be the cheapest but they are very reasonable and the administration facilities and hosting options open to you (i.e. use them or someone else to host) are superb.

I've used them in the past but ended up back with freeparking again.

www.cinames.com is usually quite good too

So, if I register the domain name with them they will then divert any requests for that site to my freespace with ntlworld? Is that right?

For domain reg I suggest 123-reg.co.uk, assuming your just looking for basic hosting (HTML, CGI, PHP etc) then you don't have to pay anymore then a few quid a month, I've used www.dzinersolutions.com before and found them to be quite good (assuming your site won't be making too much use of databases or processor intensive scrpts)

You could also try going to a site like www.webhostingtalk.com and putting in a request saying what you want and within 5 mins you will have tons of hosting companys with very competitive tailor made hosting packages.

Correct (you set it up as you like - it's masked)

I do this with www.plipton.com (right click a pic and see properties for the host location).

Edited because I disabled right click on plipton.com.

Try a mate's site - www.finsnchrome.co.uk - that's open to right click.

I find one of the best bits is their tech support is 24/7. A rather rare thing for a hosting company, i've found.

True, but I found they bombarded me with unsolicited emails which, despite asking them to stop, they continued to send. I now have a new email address which I haven't told them about

Not sure if I am being thick here - most probably seeing as it is computer related, but does this "Portfolio of names" you mention mean that you have other sites as well Ted - if so can we take a peek, or are they not car related?

I've used www.idealhosting.co.uk - domains from £5/year and hosting from £15. Excellent online management/stats too.
