OK, so in the middle of Bristol, heavy traffic, and I'm trying to pull out of a side road, to cross a roundabout ahead of me. However, I have to cross a lane that turns off befefore the roundabout (ie. can't approach roundabout in that lane).

So, lights on r/about are red, traffic backed up across my path, (but one lane away) so if I pulled out I would block a lane, and thus the path of anyone who was going left, and would then have to rely on goodwill to be let in.

So, I stayed where I was and waited for a gap once the lights went green (quite long red phase on these lights) ...

After 10 secs, lond beep from 4x4 behind who wants to go left, and thinks I should block the road to allow them to do so.

I ignore it ... (and stay put).

10 secs later, constant blast from horn ...

Engine off, out I pop, "did you want to speak with me madam, no, oh well stop beeping your horn then ..."

Grrr ....

Sounds about right. I might have explained what my intentions were and why I couldn't move, but words on deaf ears to over confident impatient bints in 4x4. Grrr.. had too many of them virtually drive me off the road rather than wait for a gap in the traffic. Braking distance = gap for them.

No need to get out - it could make the situation so much worse. Reconsider your options -- are you best inconveniencing one person for sure (behind you) or no people, perhaps turning into a few people (in the empty lane)?

Hmmm. I think I would have stayed in the car,you never know what could escalate and you always have more optons when behind the wheel. However I may use the stop lights (foot brake ) to reinforce that I was stationary (and intending to be so) and not asleep at the wheel!

Fair point, it's normally very hard to fluster my feathers but Miss Madam managed it ... I hasten to add I was very polite ...
