I'm planning on fitting a 4.6 bottom end to my 4.0 and keep seeing blocks with this type of problem - does anyone have an idea as to the rough cost of fitting new liners to an otherwise healthy block (just the machine shop costs)? Is it uneconomic?

Cheers

You are looking at about between £600 and £800+ for tophat liners to be fitted.

scratchchin Hmmm. Any idea how would that compare to the cost of having the 4.6 crank ground down to fit a small journal block?

That will probably cost £200, quite a lot of metal to remove from 2.500 down to 2.300".

Isn't he best to have the block bored out to take the large journal crank? rather than the other way round.

And top hat liners are about £80 per cylinder.

Are you using yours with normal liners?

Yes normal liners as theres nothing wrong with them. Chesmonds in Coventry can pressure test and they also fitted and blended my big valves while i was at it.

That's what I would consider, you also have to mill the slots to retain the shells.

Brummiewedge am i right in saying you have not fitted top hat liners,as i have said to you before your engine seems like a nice brew,my engine is the HC 4.0 so dont really want to develop this any further for small power increases.i think my spec cam or similar in the 4.6 with slightly modded heads would make a nice motor.

Nope, std liners. But just to be sure i had it pressure tested before surgery started. I took the crank out of a block that had THREE liners leaking! My good block started life as a 4.0 Disco motor that had an LPG fire. So i used the 4.0 pistons on the 4.6 crank assembley to increase compression, then someone offered me a new set of big valves etc...

Brummie, did you have to use new gudgeon pins when you fitted the 4.0 pistons to the 4.6 rods?
I was thinking , as long as someone did it with the correct tool , then the old pins should be ok?

I had 2 lots of engines to pick from, so i selected the best ones. They showed no real signs of wear but you wont see till you get them out. I used a hydraulic press and turned up a tool to press them out. When you replace make sure that they are nice and free. When i took them out of the Range motor there was quite a lot of carbon build up so i had them chemically dipped.

Cheers, I have both 4.0 and 4.6 now, so I can combine them.
