Hope I can still get hold of XPd base machines until SP1 comes out for Vista.

Same thoughts here. I'm not planning on upgrading my laptop any time soon. I guess I'll probably by using XP for the next few years and if MS start getting arsey with security updates I'll just move to Linux with Cegeda for games and wine for which ever version of Office will work.

Was it released, or did it escape?

I will be in no rush for this... unless Ted makes us!

Anyone know when it's likely to hit MSDN or TechNet?

Running Beta 2 on my personal desktop now, so might as well upgrade to the real thing.

How is Beta 2? Drivers still an issue?

I've found it really good, I do like it and I don't profess to be an all out Windows fan.

Doesn't talk to my old scanner, but that's gotta be 7/8 years old now, so fair enough I'll just plug in my other scanner at some point. Otherwise I've got three items showing in Device Manager as not working:

* Virtual USB Network Adapter (something to do with my WinTV device)
* IMG VP1
* PCI Input Device

But it runs fine on my Adaptec IDE RAID and coped with the Dell drivers for some other bits when installed, certainly better than the crippled Windows XP I ran before on this box, which decided that it wouldn't do copy and pasting anymore!

But I've not been bothered to investigate further to be honest, as the box is working fine for me otherwise - well except for iTunes 6/7 not working nicely

I've had a few random blue screens which I've not figured out yet - nor to be fair have I done anything much to trace it.

Just updated Office 97 Beta 2 to the Technical Refresh, and while the revised interface for Outlook etc. looks good, it has become a bit slow and clunky at times.

Just checked MSDN and it's still just the RC2 version on there for now

I've got RC1 installed on my system and boy is it slooooooooooooooow!!

(not a poor system either, it's an Athlon 3000xp with 1gb ram too, XP luvs it long time!)

Aero and the glass effects look nice but it's such a huge resource hog even with nothing else installed! Games for XP are unplayable (Frets on Fire is ridiculously slow in Vista, but full speed in XP) and that's with the ATi drivers for Vista.

On first impressions, I'll stick with XP until I do another rebuild of my PC, but that won't be anytime soon as it would consist of CPU, mobo, RAM and video card (my Radeon 9800 Pro AGP runs pretty much anything I throw at it so no point in changing yet!)

RC2 was supposed to be a vast improvement over RC1...

Comparing an feature focussed RC to the performance enhanced Manufacturing candidate is a bit off. It will be alot faster now.

Doing a bit of backwards compatability testing is all... paperbag

What do you think of Aero then, is it worth having it?

My graphics cards aren't man enough for the job and as I don't play games I can't be bothered to update them right now. I did try a couple of hacks to enable them when I first installed, but alas they didn't work

True - however it doesn't change the fact it (being the one most people have actually tried since you can get it direct from microsoft and not just based on meandering rumours) is an uber resource hog!

worth having vista just for aero?

no, not a chance...

that would be like upgrading to fedora core 6 just because it has AIGLX based X-graphics (which incidentally don't work on an ATi graphics card even with the ATi drivers!)

it's nice but it's a big change (moreso than 98 to XP, think Windows 3.11 to 95, and that's a decent "level up" comparison imo)

Microsoft have gone on record saying that Aero will be back ported to XP. They might have retracted this statement but...
DirextX 10 however will not (gits. Know which one I'd rather have).

I think visually, XP-SP3 and Vista will be hard to tell apart until you start playing.

Should we start a book on when SP1 is released?

Hmm, interesting, I wonder if they might have something to do with WPF in .NET 3.0, or perhaps a 2nd release of WPF...
