Get a second opinion.

Where abouts are you? There is a guy in Nuneaton (West Midlands) that comes VERY highly recommended when it comes to gearbox repairs. Can't remember his name off hand but I have a business card knocking round somewhere if he is any good to you...

Thats him - Ken. Ken Tomlinson.
I had him recommended to me by loads of people when I needed my box rebuilding.
Give him a call. If you need his number, give me a shout.

Have you tried DP Gears - again it is in the west midlands but they do a collection service across the UK

It doesn't matter where in the country you are or the repair specialist is, you can send it by courier.

I just had my diff rebuilt by John Read / Grantura Engineering. I don't know whether or not he does gear box's, but my point is that the cost of sending your transmission across the UK by courier is trivial compared to the cost of the rebuild.
