Not seen one this bad before.

No holes in the chassis and wish bones are OK. Just a bit rusty.

Bet that sounded great with that Exhaust conversion

Nothing a bit of Hammerite and Waxoyle will sort out, shows how bad it is compared to the transmission tunnel which is still spotless.

Er, why is the tunnel silver but the rest black (and orange obviously!)

I think you will find the silver bits are the colour of the chassis when it was new, the orange bits are ferrous oxide and the black bits are the fibreglass floor pans

What is it ? Don't say a photo of the underside of a rusty car Do TVR leave their chassis in a yard for six months by the sea before they build them up ? As you'll gather from elsewhere I'm seriously considering a Tuscan. Can you have the chassis phosphated and powder coated ?

gamekeeper - I am pretty familiar with the chassis thanks, I was referring to the "black" bits between the orange bits on the chassis! On closer inspection they could be bare metal - maybe the bottom rails have been chemically stripped prior to the photo.

Actually, no, having stripped to metal/acid etched/primed/painted/undersealed my own chassis, spending tens, if not hundreds, of hours in my garage pit, "pretty familiar" doesn't cut it! Mine wasn't nearly as bad as this one, but I did make sure every last speck of the nasty orange stuff was mechanically or chemically removed.

Meldrew looking at your pet hates I must say in response I am one of the least elitist TVr owners ever , I have one of the oldest TVR's capable of moving, I have driven virtually every model ever produced and over a longer period than most and visiting France several times a year dont always shit sitting down

I bet if you gave it a good clean it wouldn't look that bad! Most of the rust is all nice and orangey. it's the nasty deep brown endless stuff that you have to worry about. Wouldn't fancy taking this on though!!

There's a bridge near here that I cross when I'm out running (I therefore cross the bridge about twice a year). It's made of steel and is in a right old state, but is perfectly solid!

For my money, the black stuff is a previous Waxoyling attempt.

I assume it's a cerbie by the length if it . I've known S owners to a body off restoration for less visable rust than's aparent here .
It just goes to show age is nothing and condition is everything oh and a keen previous owner helps.

From the looks of it its only surface rust. You wouldn't want to leave it like that for too long, but it doesn't look structural and therefore not an MOT issue.

I was talking to a TVR Centre engineer yesterday and he told me that, some time ago, they had an L reg Chimaera up on a ramp for some exhaust problem.
The mechanic spotted a 3" rusted hole in one of the chassis tubes, reported it and his boss called the owner to ask him to come in and then explained to him that his car was a write-off!
That must take a bit of tact..

ps- hope it wasn't anyone on here.

I believe the silver grey Chassis is a 96 one.
I reckon thats a Griffith/Chimaera the antiroll bar has been taken off and isnt that a gkn diff and t5 gearbox??

anorak mines a 96 and has a creamy white chassis.

I hope you use meguers (sp) polish when the nana returns to the queens highways, it'll smell like a nana as well as looking like one

Mines '96 with a silver/grey chassis coating.

BTW - look at the pics again. Would you work/walk under a Griff or Chim that rusty that's supported only on the outriggers
