With the DVLA being as much help as a gust of wind when you're peeing... I wondered if anyone could shed any light on how long this takes.

I've got a plate on retention and want to swap this onto the Chim, so what documents do I need to take over and how long does this take? I've got the MOT, V5, plate retention doc which has already been paid for, what else. And can't this be done by post anymore??

Thanks for your help!

Need to go to a DVLC licensing centre - look in yellow pages for the nearest. Take all the docs including the tax disc so they can upadte that. If the transfer doc only has a few days left be prepared to pay to renew it.

IIRC the procedure is also printed on the back of the transfer doc.

Just did this myself, bid for number on ebay, won, seller put my name down on the retention document which he duly sent to me, with all retention fees paid. All I had to do was go to the local DVLA office (in my case Maidstone) with the retention cert, V5 and Mot. After queing for about 45 mins the transfer took about 10 minutes. They say dont bring road tax with you as they give you an envelope to post it off with, after giving you a new one. However I had mine as I did not bring the car with me. They will also give you a document so that plates can be made, although I had mine pre made up. So no bother at all.

Cool thanks! Will get it sorted tomorrow then. Want to put the 3/4 size plates on the front like the cars at Fernhursts all seem to have, any ideas where to get these made up?

You can still do this by post (although going down to your local office may help speed things up), but you end up posting it to your local office anyway.

As has been said, just don't go at the end of the month as you'll be queuing with all the people who've forgot paperwork for their tax and generally can't understand why their mate's 3rd party ins cover isn't enough to get a tax disc. I picked a number and queued for an hour in Sidcup at the end of September

Normally the transfer will happen straight away and you'll be given a new tax disc and an MOT cert with the new reg stampted on - they'll give you a transfer form and Swansea will return the new V5 in a few weeks.

The is the way it worked for me the first three times, first application of plate, going on retention and off retention. However, having just transferred the plate that plate that was different, they gave me a receipt and checked insurance details, took the V5 and MOT but left me with the tax discs.

A few days later the new tax discs and MOTs arrived (re-printed from the data, not stamped) along with a permission to transfer type form. The V5s then came back a few weeks after that.

I'm not sure if this is specific to transfers only, or something to do with the new computerised MOT certificates. Interestingly the returned MOTs also had the falure/notices sheet with it for one of the cars, even though I'd not given that to them...

don`t mean to hijack this thread but would like some advice on the number plate subject.
i have a P registered griff, and would like a plate starting with a
V, as in V8, is this allowed as someone has told me that you cannot register a vehicle with a newer plate than the original???confused

Don't be confused - the rule is quite straightforward: You can't change the plate so as to make the car appear younger than it is. Therefore you're stuck with P-prefix or earlier.

Sadly this is a no go. You cannot put a plate on that is younger than the date the car was first registered. You will have to use a 'P' prefix or earlier, or get a plate that has no age identifier, ABC 123 OR 123 ABC etc.

I have just had a nightmare taking a plate off my TVR that I bought and put on it direct from DVLA. They tried to insist I take the car to them for inspection despite it having been SORN'd for 5 months. After a lot of Emails I finally got them to visit me for the inspection. The whole process took about 3 months! DVLA are a nightmare to deal with, never ever send anything to them without taking a photo copy first, they have the ability to loose anything except their appalling reputation!

Did mine by post last week. Posted off docs etc on Monday and everything was back with me on Thurs although that was the second attempt ! First time I tried to do it while the car was SORN and apparently that's not allowed so I had to tax it again then no probs.

As I understand the rules have changed recently. It used to be that to take a number off, the doner car had to have been MOT'd and taxed within the previous 6 months. When I went to DVLA to sort mine I was told that it had changed so that as long as the car is on SORN there was no time limit. I have since read though that it can only be done if the car was 'first' SORN'd no more than 12 months previously. Confusion reigns!!

What is the process/timing if you want to take a plate off

Say for example I sell my Tiv (would only do this if I was looking to upgrade)do you have to get the plate off before you can let the car go or is there a process that you can sell the car and take the plate off at the same time ?

Hope the above makes sense !!

Get the plate done before sale. If you sell the car with the plate registered to it, its no longer your plate.

Most definitely take your plate off first! Entitlement to the plate stays with the registered keeper / owner of the vehicle. Once you have passed that on you loose all control.
As for time scale, well that is a bit of a lottery! Depends on the direction of the wind I think! Providing all your doc's are correct it 'should' be fairly quick, just take them to your local VRO and they 'should' sort it out on the spot, then it is just a case of waiting up to about 7 - 21 working days for them to send the new V5c through to you.

Another bit of advice - if you are requesting a retention certificate for a car over 10 years old the DVLA will want to inspect the vehicle currently bearing that number. This is so that they can confirm that the plate is coming from an MOT'd vehicle and not from an old moped you just dug up from your back garden etc...

I recently send my application (and docs) to the DVLA office by post. Any ideas on the turnaround with this method?
