Eyes peeled yesterday afternoon sonar I spotted a white van parked on the pavement and a device on a tripod pointing at the traffic. Had a look as I passed it and it was marked up as "air quality / pollution checks" or words to that effect.

Sounds fair enough, but it was sited right near the top of a very steep hill; most traffic passing it would be labouring more than usual. Knowing Bristol Council, I fear the worst - i.e. do "spot checks" on pollution making sure to pick the test sites that will give the worst readings and then use the results as evidence to further victimise road users.

I've no problem with pollution checks, and lets be honest, Bristol ain't the flattest part of the world anyway!!

I can't see why the council would want to artificially make the air seem dirtier, wouldn't do them much good in the long run, and so long as your car isn't exceeding the emissions limit then it wouldn't be a problem anyway, and a well maintained car should be fine.

Went through this yesterday at about 7:30pm and they were still going.

I would be tempted to say they are looking to start to introduce some sort of VOSA spot checks and the ensuing fines/tax...

I was thinking more along the lines of manufacturing ammunition for use in the next round of "can we introduce congestion charging, please?" or whatever hair-brained money-making scheme the council wants to get drivers to pay for next...

They do that already. You don't get fined, just an order to get you car fixed (which of course might be expensive / impossible).

Quite happy if they pull the stinkies over - I get fed up of hitting the "cabin re-cycle" button whenever I end up behind a taxi.

Get a charcoal filter on your cabin air, and you won't have to
