with all the discussion over the last few days of talk about 996 engine failures my nerves have started to thread and my pulse quicken
at the prospect of possibly having to replace an engine!!, I recently purchsed a 996 c4 cab with 80K on the clock which I am totally in love with. But, if im honest I stretched myself finically to make the purchase, I have a 3mth warranty with the car which lasts another month and am now thinking of purchasing my own warranty or cover plan when this expires. I cant afford the opc warranty costs, but having read the hartech car care plan which sounds ideal, does anyone know of a specailist in the south east(kent)that do a simailar monthly payment car care plan...failing that I suppose a trip up to bolton will be on the cards!!

thanks

Seems to me if you're worried about not being able to afford to fix things when they break, it makes sense to stretch for the OPC warranty.

You can't enjoy a car if you're worried about it breaking and crippling you financially. I should know, I had a Cerbera at 23 and spent my time with it cringing every time it made a funny noise.

hang on a mo...
visiting the hartech website the charges are only listed on the lifetime maintenence plan for older porsches, the newest being the 964 which they will do for £95pcm. dunno what they charge therefore for a 996 but would the cost tot up to that much less than the £895 for an OPC warranty? especially when you factor in travel and time costs from where you are to Bolton??

Softinthehead - I think you need glasses (and why) - but seriously - the information is on the buyers guide page 9 of the 3rd section. It does run over 2 pages and so is a little confusing - sorry about that (don't know what happened there as it was in one chart when I sent it to our web manager) but it clearly shows the prices.

Remember though these are not just warranty prices but include other things and go on for as long as you own the car with no added costs for high mileages or very old cars - just the same payment as normal. Most other warranty schemes (like BMW) increase costs with age and reduce cover and for my own BMW they now want over £1800/year - service costs not included and suspension, steering etc not covered either.

For clarity - if we sell the car then the prices are as follows 944, 996, Boxster and Boxster S 6K/annum = £40/month, 12K = £50, 18K = £80 and 24K = £110 all plus Vat.

If you bought the car elsewhere - 6k = £50/month, 12K = £65, 18K = £100 and 24K = £140

So for 12K/year on a 996 bought elsewhere you pay £65/month + Vat = £916.50 per year in total (including Vat).

However included completely free of charge is 2 * free services (@6k and 12K and multiples thereafter) and a free annual MOT. If you need nothing else but the services and MOT's you never pay any more than the monthly payment - but additional parts found to be worn out during the service are charged for (only the parts not the labour). We also do not charge extra for topping up coolant or screen wash etc

It is set up by standing order so we cannot alter the figures and you can stop by cancelling anytime - so no lost pre-paid warranty (as you could have elsewhere with an annual charge) when you decide to sell the car.

You can add up the cost of the various comparative services at Porsche prices and take it away from our total to find a very small contribution to the actual warranty scheme - and remember when you need a clutch, discs, pads, water pump etc - because they are worn out - you only pay for the parts (either at Porsche prices or less) now does the Porsche warranty pay for those items when they wear out?

I am not trying to claim anything exceptional for our scheme, nor promote it as we are busy enough and happy with the performance of the business etc - but I do think it is good value for money and especially since we carry on how ever old the car is and however many miles it covers.

And before we get any fummy comments about why we charge more for cars we have not sold ourselves - it is because statistically they cost more to maintain because the general public are not as capable as we are of buying a good car and of course often buy cars to put on our scheme that we were previously offered to buy and refused because they just didn't come up to scratch for some reason or another.

Hang on, you bought a Porsche 911 and you can't afford the OPC warranty?

I hate to say this, but I think you bought the wrong car. What happens when it needs new discs and pads at £1000, or a clutch, or tyres, or (whisper it) an RMS replacement.

IMHO you can't afford NOT to have the OPC warranty. Find the money. Or if you really can't sracpe the £900 together - go and see Baz quick.

It's not just the cost of the warranty though is it ?? Surely there's the £250 ish for the 111 point checky thingy, plus whatever they decide is wrong that needs putting right before you even get to spend your £900. I bought my C4 cab from a Fezza dealer and got their WarrantyWise warranty which thankfully I haven't had to use. I have until March next year to decide / Save for whatever I decide to do next. I'd love to get an OPC warranty, but I'm not sure my wallet could bare the pain. I may try and renew my Warrantywise warranty, my only concern would be their 5K limit if I did end up needing a new engine at some point. But hey S*** happens, so whatever I decide, I'm not going to let it spoil the enjoyment of driving my Porky...

with respect soovy, i hear you say this a lot and i almost never agree.

pads, discs etc have to be purchased when they wear out. have to. else the car stops working. a warranty is an insurance policy on a gamble on an unknown commodity on something with a decent reputation.

being able to afford to run the car and being able to indulge in a safer-bet-insurance-policy-yknow-just-in-case-what-if arent the same thing. sure, if it all goes arse up and your not covered that would suck, but what if it doesnt?

or what if it goes arse up and your covered but its excluded by some clever technical jargon? that would suck even more. you might call that a gamble in itself.

and with that in mind, if were going to travel this route together, shouldnt we all be considering a warranty on our warranties, yknow, just in case?

you dont need to tell me that new engines are expensive etc, i know all this. i just think that many factors have to be considered both when purchasing a warranty and when telling people that they should have purchased a warranty. like how many cars have actually gone pop? and when things go pop, are the usual popping things those parts that are DEFINITLEY covered? for me, without that information, its just investing in scaremongering. after all, if you thought it was going to break down, then its probably you that purchased the wrong car. i purchased mine partly because of its reliability.

FWIW the hartech warranty is the only one of its kind that i would ever consider investing in, as it doesnt resonate of either smoke or mirrors to me.

I feel nervous for you - what happens if the RMS goes £1k or clutch needs replacement £1k+ ?

Fair points well made, mate.

I know they are two seperate issues. There are the sundries (clutches, discs etc) which it seems to me our friend will struggle to pay for, and then there's the grending engine/gearbox risk, which he has no cover against.

Anyway, it's alright for you, with your Le Mans derived block. You git hehe

Does anyone know how many GT3 engines have actually gone pop that were not driver fault of some sort?

I've been thinking about a warranty for the GT3 but I'd never consider one neccesary for my 64RS.

But I'm not sure why? I suppose half of the reason is down to the nightmare 996 stories...

Certainly if the engine goes pop I'm in BIG trouble but how much of the rest of the car is likely to go wrong for things that 'would' have been covered and paid for by the warranty?
