I've just driven up and dwon the M4 from j16 to 8/9 and back today. Now it has been a little while since I used the mototrway but I don't remember the 2, 2 inch deep depressions on the inside lane in each direction. I can only assume it is from a succession of heavy lorries gradually sinking into the tarmac but boy is it difficult, not to mention unsafe, to drive on. The car wanders as you go over each rut and it is difficult to avoid them.
I don't imagine it is just me that has noticied but what exactly are the Highways agency doing with our road tax if our main trunk routes are becoming unsafe to use.
I hate middle lane hoggers but sadly became one today at times.

There were tramlines between 8/9 and 10 almost as soon as the last resurfacing work was completed. After 10, well, I don't find many occasions to use that lane

Yep there certainly are tram lines. I think there on most tarmac motorways. On the M25 there are concret sections which don't suffer as much. But when it goes you get holes instead. They are just in the process of filling the holes at the moment. For the amount of chaos its causing I just hope the lorry's dont break it up to quickly.

These things are a nightmare in a smart, it doesnt want to sit in either of the tramlines and makes for a very twitchy journey.

I used to drive a Range Rover towing a car trailer from Worcester to either Dover or Portsmouth, whenever I got onto either the M4 or A34 the ruts made driving in the inside lane or changing from the inside to middle lanes (e.g. overtaking) dangerous; the track of the Range Rover being too narrow for the ruts and that of the trailer too wide resulted in the combination weaving in and out of the ruts.

I thought about posting a section 56 "failure to maintain a public right of way" order on the various county coucils these two routes ran through but a friend advised me that, given the expenditure neede to make good this damage, the council would more likely force me to court to prove them negligent / deficient.

Where does the road tax / petrol tax get spent?

Always vacancies in my local County Council offices....

I drive this route regularly, and these tram lines are a big problem.

Don't hold your breath if you expect any of these to be resolved in the near future. The goverment and it's Highway (Robbery?) Agencies seem far more interested in generating income than investing in road repairs, and therefore safety.

Why spend money repairing roads when they can wait for a tail back to mean someone having to stop quickly, then spinning due to the different grip left to right on their car. Obviously the resulting accident will be recorded as speed related as the driver would have maintained control braking from a lower speed!

We all write about it daily on here, but it is unfortunate that roads and motorists are simply a way of the government generating revenue, and they will continue to manage them with the minimum of investment.
