When I move the steering wheel from dead centre either way to 11 or 1 o'clock positions, the steering feels notchy - not at all smooth.

Would I be right in thinking this is one of the U/Js on its way out?

There is no play in the steering wheel at all - just notchiness.

TIA

It may be just a bit dry. The one in the offside wheelarch is especially prone to to stuff chucked up off the road. Try cleaning it up, soaking it in light oil then covering it with grease in the hope of keeping the oil in the joint.

raise the front wheels and get someone to turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you spray copperslip into the joints (1 in the wheel arch and 1 in the engine bay).i do this once a month and find it makes a big difference

I've got exactly this problem with mine. I've tried giving it a damn good wd40ing and oiling, but admittedly, I did it on my own without someone moving the wheel for me. Is there any hope of bringing it back to smooth operation or am I gonna have to replace them????

I've asked Offords to take a look - (I'm useless with spanners - I'll let you know the outcome.

I've just had this on mine. Took off the UJs, cleaned and soaked them - no improvement. 2 new Ujs from TVRcarparts and fixed! If you do it yourself though, I found that after initial fitting it was still notchy. I loosened off the UJs again and gave the column a good wiggling which setled it into place.

FYI Offords charged me 0.7 hr labour (about £28 + VAT) for sorting the bottom u/j

and £150 + VAT for the sports exhaust conversion - get it done you know it makes sense shoot shoot
